Interesting developments at work. More later if it goes through. But it could mean more interesting work for me to do...

After work, I stopped by the Chinese grocery to pick up dinner. Then, uh, went to Sephora while I waited for [livejournal.com profile] queenmaab to get home. Yeah. I bought another Tarte lip gloss (Westley & Buttercup!) and another Tarte Lock & Roll eye shadow (gunmetal). I'm sick, I need help.

Another night at [livejournal.com profile] queenmaab's working on costumes. I brought dinner tonight... some things I picked up at the Chinese grocery. Proving once again that I can't even heat up pre-cooked food properly, the pork was... not exactly hot. But.. at least it all tasted good. I thought so at least. :\ Didn't get as much work done on the beaded sleeves as I had hoped, but there was some progress.

Came home and discovered that the boots I bought for my River costume arrived. Oh em gee. They are FABULOUS. And PERFECT. And.. okay, not 100% like what she wore in the movie, but close enough. I was afraid that the grey would be too light, but they look like a well-worn black/dark brown, which I think is perfect. Yeah. I love them. I can't wait to wear them with the costume.

Those boots look great, and really cheap for vegan shoes... shame about the puny puny sizes :(

They're really comfortable, too! Is it terrible I want to buy another pair so I have one for costuming and one I can wear around?

Hellooooo, who is sick and sad? *waves*

For a River Tam costume, I don't think it would detract from the costume if the boots looked worn. And I think they'd hold up better to regular wear than, say, my cheap eBay Ten coat is (which has gotten a small rip in the back where the seam holding the crease running up the back center got reinforced by tailors who didn't quite get what I was requesting and just sewed the loose seam without reinforcing so that the next time stress was put on the area the fabric popped).

But for that price, you can certainly afford to buy a second, "everyday" pair.

My dilemma now is whether I should get a second every day pair, or spring for an $80 pair of TUK boots that are the same ones (pretty exactly) that she wore in the series...

Hmm. More expensive to spring for the screen-actual pair after having already picked up a servicable option at moderate price, so buying just another pair of these same boots for everyday comes across as the thrifty option. (Though not as thrifty as not buying a second pair at all, of course.)

Then again, I was toying with the idea of springing for another Ten coat (since the one I've got was perfect for costuming -- especially in warmish settings where a suede coat would be sweltering) that would be sturdier and warmer than this flimsy thing, on the principle that if I'm wearing it on every cold or chilly day rather than just to cons then I'm getting my money's worth even if it's pricey. And $80 for nice screen-accurate boots so you can keep wearing the attractive thrifty comfortable almost-accurate boots as everyday wear is so much a better deal for you than dropping a few hundred on a suede coat (after having dropped maybe $120 or $150 on a wool weave coat) would be for me. So it looks like a bargain to me, but I may not be the best source of advice here.

Well, the pair I bought are close to the Serenity boots, but the TUK boots are nearly identical to the ones used in the tv series, so they would be for different things ;) I'm probably going to end up with them, knowing me.

Go fro the Ten coat! Clearly, I'm not the one to be talking anyone out of dropping hundreds on a costume piece...

Well, here's the thing on the coat: I already wasted a bit of money last October going for a Ten suit and coat from this one eBay vendor, and the suit was tolerable (wrong color scheme, but it would get the point across with the accessories I've got) but the coat was actually made from plush or some such, so I wound up springing for a second coat from a different vendor because it was the one the woman whose Ten outfit got fanboyed by David Tennant had bought from. And it looked so much better that I wasn't going to quibble over it being wool blend (the seller claimed part cashmere, which is possible but I don't much worry about it) instead of suede.

And here's the thing: I make a crappy Ten, and even if I lost fifty pounds (to my junior year of college underweight size) I'd still be too busty to play a scrawny guy. I suspect I'll make a good Donna (and in some s4 shots she's wearing a pinstriped suit, so I can get some actual use out of the suit I bought myself last October), but for costuming purposes I'm ruling Ten out for myself. And for regular cold weather wear, my better Ten coat is perfect for Dallas -- warm enough for as cold as it usually gets here on the worst days, breathable enough not to be sweltering when a cold morning warms up or when I wear it inside for a bit. It just has that one dodgy back seam.

So I see no point in dropping $500 on a suede coat too warm to wear more than a handful of days each winter for a costume I doubt I'll ever actually wind up wearing at a con anyway.

Ah, yes, I read about that fanboying incident. Rather jealous :x But I'll settle for knowing that he fanboys Joss Whedon. Is his jacket suede? It doesn't really look it on TV...

Oh, all right. You've even logiced me out of trying to encourage you to buy it ;)

It's made from upholstery fabric -- evidently suede, or similar. (I'm on the DW costuming group.)

And I don't have any real objections to paying that much on a costume item, if you've got it to spare -- I dropped that much on a Stansborough Fibres Fellowship cloak a few years back, and I dropped a few hundred on a couple of good corsets last year. I just think in this case it really would be wasting money on something I wouldn't really wear.

It's a wonderful thing, to get a thing for costuming purposes that fills you with glee. If you're lucky, you can wind up using them for other outfits, costume or otherwise.

I'm envious of your boots and mineral makeup. Sephora is evil...
