JFC. There is never a shortage of wank in Teen Wolf fandom is there? Or hate for the actors when they say something not actually offensive while totally ignoring when an actor does say something really sketch because fans think they're hot or whatever.

Earlier in the week, Tyler Posey was asked about Sterek and he responded by saying he thought it was twisted and weird (keeping in mind his exposure to Sterek is primarily via interviewers waving stuff in his face trying to embarrass him) and that if people were only watching for Sterek, they're watching for the wrong reasons.

And you know what? He's right. He and the rest of the cast are constantly bombarded with questions about the Sterek shipp - not just by fans, but by media outlets hoping to get a good quote or some kind of reaction. I'm sure they'd all rather be talking about their character or the work they're doing on the show. Personally, I think Posey has had enough of it and though maybe he could have worded it differently, I don't blame him at all for finally saying something.

And now it has escalated to Posey getting death threats. Seriously, what the hell, people? So he doesn't like your shipp. Big deal. He thinks if you're only watching for Sterek, you're watching for the wrong reasons? He totally has the right to think that.

He is not obligated to pander to your shipp, especially if the most vocal of these shippers constantly degrade his character, photoshop him out of scenes, and out now sending him threats. What exactly does he have to like about that?

I'm a Sterek shipper, but I also shipp lots of other pairings on the show. The over-zealous Sterek shippers are making it unbearable for some of us. Today I've seen people backing out of the fandom and/or stepping out of the pairing because they're so done with the way people are behaving.

I feel really bad for the actors on the show that have to put up with this crap. No wonder Crystal Reed doesn't like to read fan reactions when people on twitter started a #killallison campaign. I wouldn't be surprised if Posey started backing away as well.

I just... I can't with these people. I want to go back to the days when we at least tried to pretend that the actors didn't know what we got up to in fandom except that we like them. All this transparency and accessibility is going really, really wrong.

I just read an article that Anne Hathaway is taking a break from acting because of hate she was getting. She was voted more annoying than Chris Brown in some random online poll. People were calling her snobby, but she never seemed anything but nice to me.

Phoebe Tonkin has been getting hate from the Vampire Diaries/Originals fandom because they don't like her character on The Originals and she's now dating Paul Wesley. They're calling her a homewrecker because Paul got divorced prior to dating her and that's all her fault. Some people are saying that she's only dating him to become more popular and that she's only on The Originals because she kissed some ass to get there. Uh okay, I didn't even realize they were dating until I heard about the hate because they hardly ever post about each other. Also, she was a popular actress in Australia before she came to America and she was on Secret Circle before Vampire Diaries, both run by Kevin Williamson. He probably liked her and brought her over, so what?

Crystal Reed has been getting some really nasty hate from the Teen Wolf fandom for a long time, all the way back to season 2's #killallison campaign (srsly, WTF). It's so bad that she doesn't even want to read any fan reactions because she might see yet another flood of awful things aimed at her. Her interview questions are always terrible and sexist. If she ends up leaving the show, I wouldn't be at all surprised.

Yesterday I heard that Zelda Williams is getting a lot of crap for a character she played once on Teen Wolf and will be coming back to play again. You can dislike her character and you can dislike how her character is being changed, but threatening her and hating her for it MAKES NO SENSE. Acting is a job and if you're coming in to play a second or third tier character you have NO control over what is being written for you. You're mostly just happy someone is paying you to work. Also, there are people calling her ugly and that... WHY? Why are people doing this?

Look, I don't love everyone. I don't love every character. I can get my hate on pretty strongly too. However, you need to separate how you feel about a fictional character from how you feel about a REAL HUMAN BEING. Unless someone does something publicly that is pretty awful, I generally keep my opinion of them to myself or my friends. I certainly don't tag them or @reply them on Twitter so they can read about. WTF PEOPLE.

amezri: (kitcon ;; because i'm asian)
I don't remember if I've written about this on the LJ yet... probably not.

M.Night Shyamalan and Frank Marshall have been producing/filming the Last Airbender movie (not to be confused with the James Cameron Avatar movie...), filming for which has finished this week (or will be soon). The Asian community has been in an uproar over the white-washing (and potential yellowfacing) of the characters.

See: History of Yellowface

(I was talking to someone recently and mentioned the Airbender issue and when I used the term "yellowface" she said she'd never heard it before. I explained what it was and she was pretty shocked and offended.)

Before I get into it, I have to say I generally don't care because people always dismiss the Asians and they're always yellowfacing (because apparently that's still okay to do) and mostly I just can't be bothered. I grew up in an area where my family and one other were the only Asians in probably 20 miles. I didn't get mad at the Asian kids being recast as white kids for 21. I didn't care about Dragonball because, honestly, wtf-ever - they're aliens. The whitewashing of Earthsea (whitewashing Native Americans, in that case) was... well, I never read the books and I didn't know.

My huge problem with the destruction of Airbender by M.Night and Marshall is that the creators of Avatar: The Last Airbender, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, spent a lot of time researching the East & South Asian cultures they built into the show. Basically - they didn't pull that stuff out of a hat. If Peter Jackson cast only Pacific Islanders and non-Caucasians in Lord of the Rings, I'd expect people to be upset since it's based strongly in Anglo-Saxon tradition.

Jeff Yang of the San Francisco Chronicle wrote this article:

One reason Asian Americans such as Yang and Kim have been drawn into the show's orbit is that it has hit it big despite - many would say because of - its richly Asian-inspired setting. The core ideas are drawn from Hindu, Taoist and Buddhist philosophy; its character names - Aang, Katara, Toph Bei Fong - incorporate Chinese, Japanese and Southeast Asian phonemes; and its visual identity is modeled on traditional Asian iconography.

Read: MANAA's Response to a Letter from Paramount on the Last Airbender (and its lack of Asians).

And now read this post on the language of casting and how the casting directors of Avatar screwed us Asians over. HI. OFFENSIVE.

Jackson Rathbone (Jasper in Twilight) had this to say about his casting/character in an MTV interview (emphasis mine):

Due in theaters in summer 2010, "Airbender" has already begun to face a bit of controversy over the casting of white actors like Rathbone, Ringer and McCartney to play Asian characters -- a concern the actor was quick to dismiss. "I think it's one of those things where I pull my hair up, shave the sides, and I definitely need a tan," he said of the transformation he'll go through to look more like Sokka. "It's one of those things where, hopefully, the audience will suspend disbelief a little bit."

HI. I'm sorry. WHAT?

Dev Patel has replaced Jesse McCartney as Zuko. That's great. You know what the means now? The dark skinned South Asians are genocidal villains who are trying to destroy the peace-loving white heroes. Further information here.

The trailer for the movie came out today and over at Facebook I had another spew due to the awfulness of this film. Below the cut, links, video, and the stuff I posted on my facebook.

Apparently it's still okay to overlook Asians (media heavy) )

Hrm. I think I sewed my flag patch to my BDUs crooked. *sigh*

In other news, I have discovered the comedy wonder of The Guild. That's right, people, a silly comedy web series about people who play World of Warcraft (Or WoW-like as they don't specifically mention what game). And it's HI-larious. The show is written and produced by Felicia Day, who is starring in Joss' Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog. Point of interest: Felicia Day's blog is also very amusing.

Check it out. You will be entertained.

And checking in with the people who have had too many crazyflakes, I've stumbled upon this post in LJ land:

A Rapist's View of the World: Joss Whedon and Firefly
This is a really long rant about Joss Whedon's Firefly. Why? Because I'm angry and I think it is really important that feminists don't leave popular culture out of the equation. Especially considering that popular culture is increasingly being influenced by pornography.

Good. God. WHAT? Look, I don't have a problem with feminists or feminism or anything related to equality and rights for women. Obviously. But seriously, there are some fanatics in every group and I've found one here.

The whole Voltaire thing has turned into a debacle, though maybe only in my mind. Remember when I wrote about those random comments? And my e-mail to Voltaire asking him what his opinion was on posting streaming versions of his songs. Well, another comment and digging later, I find out that he links to one of my Vox uploads in a MySpace blog. About Robot Chicken. And at the bottom, he snarks about how he knew that there would be an illegal copy up somewhere:

For the record, I'm not even sure what the fuck this site is that has my monologues up on it.... I certainly didn't authorize it. But somehow I figured that if I did a search for the monologue name I'd find it living illegally SOMEWHERE....

Okay. Fine.

So I e-mail Voltaire for whatever reason to let him know that I just saw his blog and I'm sorry I hadn't asked permission first, but I didn't think he would mind since they were streaming only and I had linked to his site (which, he said himself is okay!) and I hope that it's okay. That's his opportunity to tell me he'd rather that I take them down. He didn't. wanky bitchfest )

For the record, I'm FINE with people putting stuff up for stream-only.
I think you should be able to see/hear absolutely anything you want to on
the internet.
It's just when people make your stuff available for download
that it turns not so good for me. Because doing this stuff is how I feed
my child. So naturally people giving it away means he doesn't eat. It's
really that simple
.

Yeah, I know, jackass. That's why I posted them as streaming files and didn't just upload the MP3s to my server or MegaUpload or sendspace or yousendit or any of the other dozens of file sharing sites out there. He just said -- right there -- that he has no problem with streaming-only and that's what it is! Show me where there's a download link on Vox for that. Show. Me. and the wank continues... )

I replied to that whole e-mail with:

Okay, I understand. I'm sorry for the confusion, any trouble, and for calling you a hypocrite. I won't be promoting your music in such a manner again.

By "hypocrite," I mean "I should have called you a cheap Hot Topic goth." And by "promoting your music in such a manner again" I mean "promoting your music ever again."

I didn't get any sort of reply to that. Which is fine.

Honestly, it's not even what he said, but how he said it. If he had asked me to take the files down, I would have -- even if he was a jackhole about it. I offered; gave him an opening to tell me to take them down and he didn't. Instead he bitched that I didn't ask first. Okay, fine. I GET IT. I could have done without the bitching, though.

I know I'm being petty and I'm not exactly 100% (or even 60%) on the moral high ground. But, seriously? For an artist who depends so much on word of mouth, he was being rather jerky. With a money-shelling fan. Nice one. ... All I'm saying is that he could have been slightly more diplomatic.

I'm still getting residual comments from his fantards telling me to take down the tracks and referring to his blog. You know what? Voltaire didn't ask me to take them down, so I'm not taking them down. And frankly, this is all making me very, very cranky (if you haven't already picked up on that, being at the end of this rant).

Here's a lovely one I got today:

The link goes to your site--otherwise I would have never found it.

Hence, Voltaire was pissed that you put his work on your site without permission. Especially since Voltaire is generally pretty easygoing with people using his work when they ask him about it, provided they credit him.

Hey, if you've gotten permission since 26 October 2007 (so, within the week), brilliant.

But the fact remains that you originally put it up without his permission, and it annoyed him.

I was just making you aware of the fact that, as far as Voltaire was concerned, at that point in time, he didn't give you permission to post his material.

Yeah. Thanks. Whatever.

If Voltaire was that upset about it, I think he and his net-savvy self could have figured out how to use the comment button or found an e-mail link to tell me to take it down. So piss off, Voltaire fantards. If he hasn't asked me to take them down, I'm not going to so you can all keep your comments to yourself.

Glargh. Huge hail storm today which. Cracked my side view mirror! So now I'm getting a replacement from eBay. Thankfully it was just the glass, which was $40 for a replacement and then I'll take it to Triumph Auto Glass to get it put in, I guess.

In Strikethrough 2007 news (because it amuses me SO MUCH):

Hrm. I suppose I should get back to packing since I need to get to bed so I can get up at stupid o'clock.

[livejournal.com profile] news has seen fit to post a message about the entire messy debacle. It's a bit too late, I think, but whatever. Look, I understand that pedophilia and child porn are disgusting things that must stopped, but mass deletion of suspicious journals and comms is totally ridiculous. And clearly they are not understanding how interests work as KEYWORDS because that's how they designed it. Cripes.

I am most amused that all of fandom seems to be working together against this and that they've taken up "Hoist the Colors" as their battlecry. Heh.

YO, HO, HAUL TOGETHER,
HOIST THE COLORS HIGH!
HEAVE HO,
THIEVES AND BEGGARS,
NEVER SHALL WE DIE!

"They"? Hm. I have somehow distanced myself from fandom. Interesting.

You know, I was going to comment more on the MASS BAALETION LJ wankery going on, but I can't be bothered. Details on Strikethrough 2007 here.

I also somehow missed the whole FanLib debacle. Oh FanLib, you are so DUMB.

And now.. I am off to go watch Danger! 50,000 Volts! and have some ice cream.
