PotC is still top at the box office at #3 with a $282.0m total gross. "Dickie Roberts" is at #1. Must be all those former child stars going to support. XD

Note to self: Clean out inbox as you have too much c.r.a.p. in it.

Cool site of the day: 247 Media Studios - lovely flash work and creepy music. My kind of site.

(via [livejournal.com profile] buhfly) Johnny Depp was quoted out of context:

"What I was trying to say is that, compared to Europe, America is a very young country and we are still growing as a nation. My deepest apologies to those who were offended, affected, or hurt by this insanely twisted deformation of my words and intent."

.. but I liked that he called America a dumb puppy.. heh

Justice Dept. Drafts Sweeping Expansion of Anti-Terrorism Act - oh. great. I'm leaving now.

White Wolf Publishing sues Sony over "Underworld" - um, hi! You didn't invent the vampire/werewolf mythos or the Romeo/Juliet-type storylines. Of crouse there are going to be similarities. Go away.

Tinney adds, "Our fans think they're going to be seeing our film. Of course, if the movie gets released, in a way they will be."

Uhm. I don't think anyone will think that the movie is at all related to Masqurade.. except now, since you'd said it. Even then... meh.

Didn't Anne Rice sue White Wolf once upon a time over the Vampire: The Masquerade books?

Ooooh really? I have no idea :D But that would be interesting.

Yeah, I think it was right after WW put out the Vampire sourcebooks. She claimed their concept was ripped off of Vampire Chronicles, and if I'm remembering correctly, WW had to change some stuff in their books. (but I might not be remembering correctly) Maybe it's just the fact that I'm really rusty when it comes to WoD games, but Vampire never really seemed to be that similar to VC.

If White Wolf is determined to get their panties in a twist, they need to go after Laurel K Hamilton. Much as I like Anita Blake, she IS a rip off of the World of Darkness in so very many ways. Anyone familiar with WoD can see it if they read any LKH books...

Of course, White Wolf took all of THEIR stories and backgrounds from mythology and other sources, so they really can't scream if other people do the same thing.

-Bree, used to having long involved conversations on the copyright status of the World of Darkness ;)

Have you seen the movie yet? It may be that the movie borrows heavily against concepts that White Wolf has copyrighted, not just the vampire vs werewolf concept. Honestly, the first thing I thought when I saw the latest trailer for the movie was that they based it on whitewolf, it is damningly similar in appearance, maybe more so in content. :-/

Don't companies have to defend their copyright for threat of losing it? I'm not too familiar with the law in this case.

Actually, I thought it was rather similar to Anita Blake and a couple other vampire vs. werewolves books I have read. *shrug*

They do have to make an attempt, more so if there is baltant theft.

If people can sue McDonald's for not telling them that french fries can turn their precious kids into lardasses, then WW may have a case.

But, like Bree said - everyone borrows from the same pot of mythos in works like this. WW would be in danger of being sued by the ancient Greeks, northwestern Native Americans, Italians, thugs, feminists, Vikings, tech heads, homeless people... The list goes on. If someone "borrowing" plot and storylines is "wrong," then WW is in a heap of trouble.

That said, I know several WW enthusiasts - mostly LARPers - who are dying to see what they call, "White Wolf: The Movie." Is it Sony's fault that people are making this connection? Probably not. Have stupider cases won settlement? Hell, yeah.

Donna :)

People these days are sue-happy. That's annoying. This is me being annoyed. :-P

I've never read or played the Masquerade/WW stuff, so I guess I really shouldn't be saying anything.

Oh please. Give me a fucking break.

So is the release date going to be pushed back?

From everything I've read about the movie.. it IS a horror-ish take on R&J.. and the last time I checked, Romeo & Juliet was written by William Shakespeare, not Nancy Collins.

I hate people who sue.

Have no idea about the release date. I hope not :-. The filmmakers claim that they were not trying to write a R&J-type story, but it might save them in case of a lawsuit XD

Yeah really.

If it doesn't come out on the 19th, I'll be pissed off.

That's as bad as if Joss sued ABC Daytime for the Storyline with Lucy (a slayer) and Ian (a vampire) falling in love. So is the realse date really being pushed back?

I haven't heard anything about the releasing being pushed back.
