Pirates of the Caribbean
Jul. 13th, 2003 05:29 pmWhheee! Just got back. Loved it. Spoilers and rambling behind the cut.
interview with Orlando on V. Graham Norton
Firstly, was it just me or did they cut some scenes? I thought I saw a clip where Will says, "Avast!" and Jack looks and him and tells him never to say that again. Watching the trailer again, they clipped the swordfight at the beginning and took out the bit with Will swinging down from the rafters and landing. Or maybe they clipped the landing. Eh, something. They also trimmed the bit I was really looking forward to - Johnny being all flamboyant with the jazzy hands saying, "You're not facing normal pirates - cruel, demented, vicious pirates, to be certain ..[].. cruel, demented, vicious pirates who cannot be killed." There are a few others I'm sure, but that's what I remember after one viewing. Hopefully deleted scenes will be part of the DVD! :D
Right then. Previews were iffy. The new "Cradle of Life" trailer was interesting. If I have to see a "Stuck On You" preview one more time, I'm going to scream. "Hidalgo" looks fantastic. "The Haunted Mansion" seems a bit goofy - had they made it more of a horror film, I'd probably go see it.
Someone mentioned this, but they really did find an ugly little boy to play young Will. Huh. Oh well. Jack had the best entrance of any character in the film. Orlando fan that I am, Johnny Depp totally made the movie. If he wasn't in it, I doubt it would have been as good. Orlando was great eye candy, but I don't know if it was writing or direction, but he was kinda.. meh. The swordfights were fantastic, though. Kudos to choreography and dedicated actors. Keira gave a good performance walking the fine line between damsel and tough girl.
When they did the cute & cfluffy monkey close-up, a very large section of the theater went, "awwww!" Heh.
Special effects were great - but then they were done by ILM, so that's to be expected. The shifting between actors and skeletons was really smooth. They were really able to capture the actors' features and give all the cg effects a real feel instead of the too-clean animation that ruined "Matrix: Reloaded" for me and keeps me from wanting to see "The Hulk."
And it's expected so.. time to gush. Orlando. Orli. Will. Eee! So dashing and heroic and a kick-ass swordsman. Though, you could stand to loose that silly hat at the end. He was the stereotypical dashing hero, but I didn't mind :-P
Jack Sparrow: How far are you willing to go for this lass?
Will Turner: I would die for her.
Jack Sparrow: Good. No worries then.
Cap'n Jack Sparrow. So. Damn. Amusing. If they ever decide to do a sequel, it would be more than enough to feature Jack & the crew of the Black Pearl. The Keith Richards take was a great direction to go and of course you'e gotta love the eyeliner. And the hand movements. I was expecting a full-on impression when I heard that Orlando got the okay to slip it in there, but all he did was the squinty eyes and hand motions... though that was pretty damn amusing in itself. Everyone in the theater gasped when Barbossa ran that sword through Jack - and I have to say that if he'd died I would have been very pissed. "Savvy" may be a new vocabulary word.
Mr. Gibbs: Then one day, he roped a couple of sea turtles and rode them away.
Will Turner: He rode a pair of sea turtles? Where'd he get the rope?
Jack Sparrow: [from behind them] Human hair... from my back.
Geoffrey Rush is... well, he's Geoffrey Rush. Fantastic as always.
Barbossa: Thank you, Jack.
Jack Sparrow: You're welcome.
Barbossa: Oh, not you. We named the monkey Jack.
A couple plot holes, but none that really bothered me enough that I remember them after leaving the theater. The movie itself was a bit over two hours and though you felt the time, you kinda don't mind because there are no slow parts during the film. It's cut exceptionally well and the pacing is great. Of course, with Gore Verbinski & Jerry Bruckheimer, you can't really expect anything less.
Um.. whatelse... Norrington isn't a bad guy and I felt a little bit bad for him. Corset jokes are amusing... to a point. Stayed for the special monkey gag bit at the end of the credits. If you missed it, bsically you see an apple floating in the water, Barbossa dead on the pile of treasure. The monkey swims in, creeps up the pile and swipes a gold piece. He turns skeletal and leaps at the camera.
Maybe more later or after another viewing. I'm done now -_-;;

V Graham Norton
Date: 2003-07-16 11:04 pm (UTC)I'm told BBC America is 3-4 months behind, so it'll be a bit of a wait before we see it here. And also they will probably cut it to a 30min episode...

That's not in there? *blink* Could have sworn....
They cut the Keira/water/shark shot, too, didn't they?
That'll just make it better on DVD.
Re:
Date: 2003-07-16 10:33 pm (UTC)Yeah, I didn't see a Keira/water/shark shot. In fact when they dumped her in I was expecting a shark...
DVD is out in December I hear.
Re:
Date: 2003-07-17 08:43 am (UTC)*squee* Christmas pressie! *dance* I hear Disney's signed the entire cast for a sequel already. Which I wouldn't mind. But. God, Disney needs to stop that....
