As my away message said today:

Why are people tools? No, seriously, why are they? Can we have a little common sense and not even joke about showing an actor RPS? Because that is like... just asking to be sued.

If you have no clue what I am talking about, here are the links from people who were a lot more involved than me. Actually, I'm not involved with LOTR RPS at all. I just read about it this incident, but it still annoys me.

the shitstorm as detailed by mydarkstar
mala is pissed too

The offending tool's site
the (roflmao) hoax of a guestbook entry from ian & nick (on the second to last page)

Also... thieves should be dragged out into the street and shot. Repeat offenders should be jabbed with sharp, point sticks until they bleed to death.

Okay, I have been guilty of using pics of actors and doing what I will to them, but does anyone seriously believe that I own those pics? And even so, I put disclaimers up saying what they are and where they come from. Stealing people's art, images, whatever and telling other people they are yours and that you don't other people stealing images you just stole is idiotic and wrong. Especially when you steal from wel-known artists in the fandom. Chances are, someone will find it and you will be in big, big trouble. Get. A. Clue.

The stupidity just astounds me...

And did you notice, it's not only her that believes this was a good idea? In that guestbook of hers there was someone who apparently thinks this whole debacle was 'very brave of her'.

WTF?

Yes. Right. How absolutely DUMB can you be? To be in fandom deeply enough to be participating in this stuff and NOT REALISE how many laws you're breaking?! Not to mention how offended these people could be. I happen to consider myself a pretty decent writer, but I wouldn't ever DARE show my work to anyone remotely connected with any of 'my' fandoms. Ever. I mean, okay, if someone like with a personality like Claudia Christian (i.e. pretty open-minded and easy-going) came up to me and personally asked, and swore to me that it was personal interest only, and I didn't have to give names/emails/urls, and if all sorts of other convoluted promises were true and the world was made of cheese, then I might - but how bloody likely is that?

I swear, some people should just be pushed off the edge of the world...

Blatantly replying to my own reply to make clear that I find RPS squicky at the best of times, even done well - each to their own but please, there are plenty of fictional characters around without starting on RPS...

Okay. Now that was going to turn into a rant about the people who are ranting about this whole thing (with perfectly good reason, I might add) and that's wrong. Because most of them are sensible and nice and wonderful people, and I actually only want to rant about idiots who think that the object of their work is going to be impressed by them. And in that person's private time no less. As if they have nothing better to do than pander to... I hesitate to say 'us' and lump myself in with this, but okay, fandom in general.

UGH.

I write fanfiction - fictional characters portrayed by actors, with little or no personality traits in common, and still I'd want the world sliced up, covered with pickle and between two slices of nice wholemeal bread before I even considered showing my work to anyone official. I've seen court summons' and I'd rather not have one with my name on it, thank you very much...

I agree with you on both points. RPS hasn't really been interesting to me, but I guess people have the right to write it. The people who are cheering this idiot on just aren't thinking. Would you want RPS about you to be shoved in your face? I don't think so.

To paraphrase: Their logic does not resemble our Earth logic.

I tried leaving a message in that girl's guestbook, but - surprise, surprise - they have to be approved. I'm also starting to think that she's making up her own entires.
