costuming: hawkeye
Jun. 4th, 2012 01:31 pmI've been working on my cheap-as-possible/ghetto Hawkeye costume and have been posting progress on Twitter, so I thought I'd finally make a little post about it here.
Originally, I had planned on doing a hilarious, cheap as hell, ridiculous looking costume. Somehow, I've come up with something that's not really that cheap (current cost so far is like $80 because of various supplies and tools) and the accessories actually look pretty decent.
Here are some photos I posted to Instagram with some commentary:

I bought this bow for $6 at Walmart - it was originally cream & brown. Totally cheap plastic. I took it apart and spray painted black, added two coats of matte clear coat. Used elastic cord for the bow string so that I can pull it a little bit (even though I don't have arrows) or wear it crossbody.

Hawkeye's arm guard in the movie is actually two Beiter soft arm guards. Besides the fact that Renner's trying to keep from injuring himself doing some of the action scenes, I think they might be using two for length...though I have no idea why they just didn't get him a different one. Anyway. I used elastic and nylon webbing. It's totally not even 70% correct, but it looks all right. I could have added fussy bits like the d-rings, but whatever.

Oh man. The shooting glove. I was a bit worried about this one. I got the black leather & wrist cuff at a craft store but had to get the maroon/red leather from Etsy. I used the same elastic I had from the arm guard. The rivets are from Joann's. I looked at some traditional shooting gloves to figure out the pattern for the fingers and I'm not sure they're exactly right. I decided to close the ends, but I think Hawkeye's might actually be open at the end like a traditional glove. Whatever. I also realized as I was sewing this together that the back of his glove has tiny d-ring hangers which I never bought and after a search online can't just buy three of and I don't really need 1000 of them. Therefore, I cheated and decided to just use the rivets. Trying to fit the glove on myself and figure out how long the elastic should be was a little tricky and I'm not totally sure I did it right, but I think overall it came out okay.
Next up, I have to make the vest. I bought a basic black vest that I'm going to add fabric panels to, but that involves making a pattern, making sure they are cut and applied evenly.. and then sewing. I haven't decided yet if I want to hand sew or use my machine because even though I've made skirts and stuff with my machine, sometimes it hates me and wants to just jam all the time. It probably needs to be serviced. The vest needs to be done in the next couple days, though, as I want to have it for Albany ComicCon this Sunday.
For the pants, I've got some exercise/compression pants I found at Old Navy, though I could probably get away with some slim, black jeans. I'm going to use the TUK Gladiator boots I have from a River costume, which should look pretty good with everything. I'll post photos once I get everything together.
