First up, there were some movies I saw trailers for that I'd be interested in seeing:

Immortals. This movie looks ridiculous. I will watch it for the following reasons: It's being directed by Tarsem Singh. It looks like a fantastic art spectacle. I love Greek mythology.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes. WUT. Interesting new Planet of the Apes prequel. As always, it's our fault for screwing with genetics. David Hewlett is in this one!

Real Steel. Hugh Jackman & Evangeline Lily. And giant robots, plus an AI who develops feelings! Or something. Why not?

Green Lantern. Honestly, don't give a frak about this series, but I'll always watch Ryan Reynolds play an action hero.

I went into X-Men: First Class with no expectations. After the disappointments of X3 and Wolverine, I wasn't going to get my hopes up. I'd only seen trailers and a couple shots of January Jones as Emma Frost, so I haven't seen much publicity either.

SPOILERS FOR X-MEN: FIRST CLASS!

The movie opens with the same scene from the first X-Men movie of Erik in the concentration camp, but then we get to see a young Charles at home in Westchester where he meets Raven. Young Charles is played by Laurence Belcher, who was Young Kazran in the Doctor Who "A Christmas Carol" episode! Awww.

And back to the concentration camp where Erik can't control his powers so his mother gets killed and... he goes nuts and kills everyone except the guy who shot his mother. WUT.

OH. Highly amused that Charles was a total womanizer on the university bar scene. He's good looking and can read minds. Come on, of course he was hitting on all the ladies. You do feel bad for Raven, though, with her hot "brother" having all the drunken fun while she has to stay sober and use her powers to look normal...while having a crush on him.

Oh man, all the thoughts are falling out of my brain....

Kevin Bacon as Sebastian Shaw was... well, I dunno. I guess he kind of looks like Shaw. Other than that, I'm kind of meh on the whole thing.

That scene with Erik in Argentina fucking up those Germans in the bar? I've never used the phrase "like a boss" to describe anyone, but holy shit. LIKE A BOSS, ERIK. LIKE A BOSS.

On that note, let's take a moment and talk about how Fassbender speaks like four different languages in this movie.

I like that they threw Moira MacTaggert (played by Rose Byrne!) in there, but that she is a CIA agent is a bit weird. I was pretty amused that Oliver Platt was there as a guy in charge of a secret Fringe Division-type section of the CIA.

Charles & Erik is the best bromance ever. Seriously, boys, just go get a room. It's kind of tragic that it's Erik's fault that Charles can no longer walk. Adds extra angst to some scenes in the earlier movies. Actually, I think I need to watch the first movie again and see if I can fanwank any First Class subtext into it.

I need to find all the interviews with James McAvoy & Michael Fassbender because I bet they are filled with dorky fun times.

Alex Summers! But.. not Scott's brother? I don't think they'd make Havok his father, but maybe his cousin or something I guess? And Banshee was a teen so... probably not going to marry Moira? LOL

I was under the impression that Charles built Cerebro? It does make more sense that Hank did, though. And the crack about not touching Charles' hair was hilarious. (Also, was that little girl supposed to be Storm?)

Wait, wait. Jason Flemyng was Azazel?! Totally didn't recognize him.

Nicholas Hoult (About a Boy) is all grown up and was pretty adorable as pre-furry Beast. Of course, while watching it, I thought he looked like a weird mix of Cillian Murphy & James Marsden.

Okay, so that wasn't Stacy X like a bunch of us were thinking... instead it's Angela Salvadore who I had totally forgotten about because.. really don't even care.

THE WOLVERINE CAMEO. OMG YOU GUYS. Everyone in the theater LAUGHED. AS THEY SHOULD. Xavier & Erik walk into a bar and Wolvie is just, "go fuck yourself," and it was AMAZING.

Emma Frost was... I dunno. She was okay as the White Queen of the Hellfire Club, but she was basically just eye candy. I feel like she should have been able to fight back against Magneto and Charles, since she did it earlier in the film. I did appreciate that her costumes were more modest than they could have been.

I loved the scene with the kids in the observation room just screwing around and showing off their powers because they never could before. I understand that Xavier was kind of disappointed that Raven would participate in those shenanigans, but seriously, they're just kids who finally get to meet people like themselves.

I was kind of mad about them killing Darwin...but I might also have been distracted by the fact that Tony Curran (Marcus in Underworld, Van Gogh in Doctor Who) was one of the men in black.

Good gods there was a lot of teary eyed moments with Erik & Charles. Oh, boys. I wish their relationship was a bit longer, though, like in the comic where they were together for years, not weeks.

The pre-Danger Room training sequence was fun.

I kind of love those costumes. They're all like, "Professor, do we have to wear them?" and he's like, "not bullet proof - put them on."

Look there on the carrier! Michael Ironside and Brendan Fehr.

This is silly, but I really liked that when they got back into the crashing Blackbird, Erik magnetized himself & Charles to the floor of the plane.

Michael Fassbender, ILU, but your Irish accent is showing at the end there. :D

END SPOILERS

The score was fabulous and I liked the look of the whole film.. except the lens breathing during focus pulls. I don't feel like they're always this obvious, or maybe I'm just noticing it more? I have no idea, but it bothered me every time. Ugh.

Overall, I think this makes up for the awful offerings of X3 and Wolverine. I totally want to see it again!

I HAVE A LOT OF FEELINGS.

I'm glad you liked it!

Fassbender TOOK CHARGE AND TOOK NAMES in the bar scene in Argentina. And the German...and French...and Spanish. Um...yeah. That was pretty awesome. :D

I WAS SO MAD THAT MOIRA DIDN'T HAVE HER ACCENT. And that there was nothing between her and Banshee. Also, is it wrong of me to think that Banshee looked like a total stoner?

THE CAMEOS...LOVED THEM SO MUCH. My screen was cheering at Logan's appearance. I want to watch the first movie again, to see if he recognized Charles at all.

I thought the Shi'ar (sp?) empire gave Charles the tech to build Cerebro? But there's no way they could've kept that in the movie continuity, so having Hank build the prototype worked. That was TOTALLY Storm in the Cerebro sequence...no idea if there were any other cameos in there though.

LOVED the bromance.

I have a lot of feelings and thoughts and I need to see it again!

Fassbender. Geez. Yeah. Kind of love him a lot.

Actually, yes, I AM MAD ABOUT MOIRA NOT BEING SCOTTISH. And kind of weirded out by stoner Banshee.

Cerebro was created by Xavier and then Hank tweaked it in the comics, but in movieverse, Xavier says that Magneto helped him build it. Which, at the time made sense because we hadn't seen Hank yet. It could still work here if for some weird reason during the 70s or 80s Magneto took a break from being mad at Charles to help him out.

I think I missed at least one trailer, coming in just a smidgen late for the very start -- and then took a high-speed emergency bathroom break and came in at the tail end of the Planet of the Apes trailer, just in time for the proper start of the movie. I'd seen the rock-'em-sock-'em robots trailer a few weekends back with PotC 4 and spent several minutes boggling at who thought this was a great premise for a film. I hadn't been all that interested in the Green Lantern film -- like, possibly seeing it on Netflix rather than waiting for cable -- but that trailer was better than the other ones I'd seen and kind of sold me on it. (Though I'm still probably waiting for Netflix.) And we got the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo trailer, too, just a day or two after I'd run across the comment on my friends list about the trailer having an awesome remix of "Immigrant Song." Love to have an MP3 of the song, not interested in seeing the movie or reading the books. Great trailer, though.)

I wasn't too spoiled for the movie -- I'd seen a few promo shots and trailers, but hadn't heard about Logan's cameo.

I loved it -- the one thing I regret is that they were treating it like it's probably going to be the only Charles and Erik prequel movie they'll get, so they had to rush things to try to get them to where continuity says they had to wind up. Not enough time for Charles and Erik to form their relationship, not enough time for Raven to shift allegiance from Charles to Erik, not enough time for training that first time (though I supposed that was part of the point, them being sent into action well before they were ready).

I read a comment elsewhere saying something along the lines of the later scenes in the movie being shot earlier, maybe before the dialogue coach had really gotten Fassbender sounding non-Irish.

Yes, I wish the pace from BFFs to enemies was slower, but I guess they wanted to wrap it up in case they didn't get another movie.

Ah, yeah, I wondered if possibly those scenes were shot first before Fassbender got his accent under control.

I've seen tidbits and gifs on tumblr and OMG BOYS ILU. Stuff about Fassy crying at Twilight and James sitting on him and passing gas...I mean, I LOVE THEM SO MUCH and I haven't even seen the damn movie.
