dragoncon; tropic thunder
Aug. 17th, 2008 12:54 amOMFG. They just added Nathan Fillion to the DragonCon guest list. And Rainbow Sun Francks. And Torri Higginson!! GAH!!
Right. So. I hadn't really planned on doing anything today (technically yesterday..) but I met up with
katkel and Dawn for a trip to the psychic fair. Then we had lunch, made a trip to the dollar store and Joann's. After that, I went back to
katkel's and hung out. Dawn came over later and we watch Penelope before meeting up with
sweetwildandmad and
punslingerr for Tropic Thunder.
You guys. I totally kind of expected to hate Tropic Thunder (the parts without Downey) and I totally didn't. It was actually pretty amusing.
So.... spoilery chatter for Tropic Thunder. The fake trailers were pretty awful... except for the Satan's Alley trailer which was fabulous. Srsly. I want to see that again. Actually, can I see that movie? XD
Downey is freakin' scary looking with the blond hair and blue contacts. It just looks so... strange. Steve Coogan! Got blowed up! hahaha Yeah, that was shocking and entertaining. And the drug guys were speaking Mandarin and I was all, "what? Mandarin?!" but it was sort of crap Mandarin... like my brother or I speaking it, you know? Basically, it sounded like someone who wasn't used to speaking it all the time. Jack Black was pretty funny. I feel like I've seen Jay Baruchel before, but I don't know where. Anyway, I liked him as Sandusky -- the only one who went to boot camp and read the script. Heh. Loved Brandon Jackson as Alpa Chino. Matthew McConaughey was a fun surprise and... Tom Cruise didn't suck that bad. He was actually entertaining.
I didn't even know about the controversy of the Simple Jack/retard thing until today. I guess it's because the whole Downey/black face issue was addressed rather immediately while that wasn't really caught until screenings. The thing is... it's not meant to insult the mentally disabled. It's to mock the actors who portray mentally disabled characters to further their career. And I totally get that.
I'm too tired to remember what else I liked about it. It was a good time and, admittedly, some of the jokes were a bit tasteless but it was still fun. I'd see it again. I'll probably buy the DVD.
