I am currently 12 minutes into the first episode of Life on Mars and it's very odd, but I'm liking it and will probably get the DVDs next time they're on sale at HMV. The Brits sure do know how to make TV. Heh.

Have spent 2 hours researching new DVD players because mine is being annoying and picky with what sort of XVID files it'll play. Some 12-bits will work, some won't. Some will play perfectly fine, while others play all pixelated and smeary rainbow colored. I can't figure out what the exact difference are. Right now it's like 95% work, so that's probably not that annoying, except it is. Argh. So I'm thinking about the Philips DVP 5960.

Right, okay. Just done with the first episode of Life on Mars. Digging the music, the cinematography, the script, the acting, all of it. Rock on. *watches more*

Life on Mars is full of win. It's like The Prisoner meets Starsky & Hutch which is just brilliance... with Roxy Music, David Bowie and T-Rex in the background. I don't know what's going to fill the LoM void when it ends. ...Until the American remake comes along, that is, which is sure to not big a hugely bad idea at all or anything. *sighs*

Yes, it's full of awesome :D

The remake is being targeted for the 2007/2008 season for ABC. Argh. David E. Kelley is producing so perhaps it won't be a flaming tragedy.

Weird. Sounds like the codecs and player on your computer can handle the video but the chipset in the standalone DVD player can't. If your using VLC, this would probably make sense.

So I'm thinking about the Philips DVP 5960.

Oh, this one is on my wishlist. Last year I bought a Philips region free player (that also players DivX/XviD) but I haven't used the DivX/XviD playback enough to tell you whether or not it's any good. The files I have played back appeared to be fine.

I will tell you that the UI on mine is rather, well, plain. It's funtional but that's it. Going from from a Sony, which after the fiasco of the last two years I will never buy again, it's somewhat of a shock.

Have you checked for the region free hack for this? I bet it exists.

I'm using Media Player on my computers and I've tried having a look at the avi files that don't work, but I really can't tell the difference. Meh.

I currently have the Philips DVP 642. I am really happy with it, generally. And it is region-free. The DVP-5960 also has a region-free code; which is what is cool about the Philips, you don't have to really hack them. The UI on all the Philips seems pretty crap (8 character file limit), though my friend has one of the Philips DVD recorders and it's got a shiny menu.

The first episode isn't entirely representative of the whole, cos Sam is WAY WAY EMO in it. Episode 2 is where you get a real sense of the show as a whole. And trust me, Gene grows on you like a fungus.

I love my Norcent, but the 12 bit thing still confuses the hell out of me.

Ah, well. Having just mainlined all 8 episodes of season 1, I can say I definitely enjoy it and will be looking for season 2 shortly. The last episode airs this week or something? Will def be buying the DVDs next time HMV has them on sale.

Yeah, I do like Gene a little ;)

Yes. The formatting thing drives me a bit nuts. I can't figure out why some work and some don't when all the specs of the avi file look exactly the same. Ugh.

That DVD player is nearly the same as mine, except I have the whole record to DVD thing. I haven't had any issues with playing any avi/mpegs, etc... I haven't tried the USB thing on mine, I like wasting DVDs I guess. Theoretically, it's very cool. If I needed it. :)
