Apparently this is too long for one entry, so I'm breaking it up into two....

March 23, 2007

Got up at 5:00am to get showered and dressed to go. Actually left the house on time at 7:00am. The drive down took about 4 hours and was generally uneventful. I decided to get gas about half-way down at a Mobile on the Cross Island -- I think that's where I was anyway. [livejournal.com profile] crushw_eyeliner called me a couple times during the drive to hopefully resolve accommodation issues (which she did). The sky was pretty sunny the whole way down, but once I got to Stony Brook it was all overcast. Meh.

[livejournal.com profile] ozw met up with us to let us into his building. Dragged all our stuff in to the building. [livejournal.com profile] seijitataki left pretty much immediately to get in the ticket line. [livejournal.com profile] ozw and I hung out in his room waiting for [livejournal.com profile] alorarose to arrive. When she got here, we headed over to the ISC to pick up our badges. There was no one else at the ISC, just staff and volunteers. Headed to the badge table and it freaked me out a bit when "Mom" recognized me. I think I'd only met her twice for a minute or two at every ICON. So. Yeah. Weird that she remembered my name and everything. Anyway, I got my badge. Woohoo!

Headed to the SAC to find food. Food good. Campus food? Still the same as any campus food, which means gut-rot. Blargh. And super-expensive chicken tenders. Oh well. After eating, we headed to the Science Fiction Forum to find [livejournal.com profile] seijitataki. [livejournal.com profile] ozw and [livejournal.com profile] alorarose cooed over the Bloo plush I made for my brother's Mac costume. We hung around for a few minutes before I went with [livejournal.com profile] ozw to wait in line to buy his badge.

We had about two hours to wait in line before the ISC opened for ticket sales. Good thing it was raining! Hooray? While waiting, there was this really annoying kid who kept... talking. And asking me dumb ass questions like, "how many martial arts do you know?" and other random creepy bullshit stuff. Oh. My. God. It eventually stopped raining, but was still pretty cold. Was able to snag some pretty cool photos of people in costume while on line. There was an awesome Jack Sparrow and a Hamburglar who was handing out burgers to people on the line. When [livejournal.com profile] ozw was finally able to get in to buy his badge, I waited outside and talked with a kid named Ryan who was dressed as Vash. Of course, when [livejournal.com profile] ozw came back out, we didn't really have anything else to do, so we wandered back inside to wait for panels to start.

We finally wandered over to Pritchard Large for the Brits Do It Better panel with Jamie Bamber. [livejournal.com profile] alorarose met us there on our way in to find seats. Jamie ended up about half an hour late -- probably due to weather delays. During that time, we all bantered a bit with each other and some guys made remarks about my SG-2 jacket (as in, they didn't know there was an SG-2). It was all a bit weird as there was no program moderator and no PA set up. When Jamie finally arrived, he waved hello to everyone and sort of plopped onto the stage with his feet hanging off the edge. He didn't know what he was supposed to be talking about -- someone shouted "Brits do it better!" and Jamie sort of laughed and said something like, "we do everything better." Then there was discussion of British chocolates, which I must agree are totally better. It quickly changed to a semi-moderated Q&A. There was still no PA setup at this time and Jamie is a really soft speaker so it was sort of hard to hear. He did get a bit louder as the session went on before the tech people finally came and setup the crap PA system. I can't even remember everything he talked about, but I tried to record it -- hopefully I'll be able to get audio off that. I do remember that he mentioned the Tyrol episode, "Dirty Hands," was originally supposed to be a Dee/Saggitaron storyline. Someone asked him to give a quick run down of his background and how difficult he found the American accent. Jamie grew up in London, but his father is from Detroit, MI, and his mother is from Ireland, so he's a dual citizen. He finds the accent pretty easy (it's essentially his dad's) and says that he has a knack for picking them up. He doesn't like seeing the stuff on the Basestar -- in fact he really doesn't like any Cylon stuff. I think he'd be pretty happy if they were just painted as the evil, evil enemy. I can't remember if it was during this Q&A or the Cylon panel, but he mentioned that Mary McDonnell (Roslin) had a problem with her character's stance on Cylons -- that they should all be wiped out in order to save humanity, so Jamie had a talk with her and made her a lot more comfortable with it. Ha! He's good friends with James Callis (Baltar), but when they're on set together, he finds him (as Baltar) entirely repulsive. Uhm, what else... someone asked if there was going to be a Horatio Hornblower movie. Jamie hadn't heard anything about it, but said Ioan Gruffudd was still probably interested in the role, though he's priced himself out of it unless they do a motion picture. He talked a little bit about the filming of the series and how at first they were all very keen to make it as real as possible, so they actually filmed on the ocean. Then later, they learned that it was much easier and less costly just just fake it -- have the ship on a set, the sea on the horizon and just sort of tilt the camera around to simulate waves XD But, yes, he'd mention the Hornblower movie to Ioan, as he was going to see him soon. Everyone wanted to know about Kara/Katee, of course, but he never gave a definite answer. He certainly made it sound like her departure was permanent -- that Ron had given her a gift because she's young and there are still many opportunities open to her right now and she should be free to do them. He said they didn't have a farewell party for her; that a lot of people didn't know she'd be leaving until they read the script/did the scene. Argh. Oh. And Season 4 is very likely the last season and it will involve the discovery of Earth, though that will be a plot point and not the ending point of the show.

After his Q&A, [livejournal.com profile] ozw and I went up to the ISC track to get in the autograph line. We didn't have much of a wait and I love the ICON autograph line because you really can just take your time and chat a little with the guest. While in line, we chatted with this guy that I've seen at ICON every year as well as Farpoint in February -- I guess he goes to like 15 cons a year on the East Coast. I can't remember his name... Dan maybe? Anyway. He was interesting; I'm sure I'll run into him at Shore Leave.

So once it was my turn to go up, I paid the $20 for an additional signature (wasn't planning on waiting in the other lines that weekend) and $10 for a photo because Jamie was actually getting up from his seat to take some nice shots, so I thought it would be worth it. First thing I did was give him Tom McRae's self-titled album. I mentioned that I wasn't sure what sort of music he listened to, but thought he might like it and I asked if he'd ever heard of Tom before. He looked at the CD for a moment and then said that he thinks he'd heard of Tom before and he'll definitely give it a listen when he got home. I also gave him a print of Deliquesce, which he seemed to like and asked a bit about how it was made. He said I was really talented and that he'd have to hang it up in his new home. Awww! ^^ I handed him the DVD cover to sign first and told him about how I'd met Richard Hatch at Farpoint in February and that he'd written a little message for Jamie: "Watch your back, Apollo." Jamie sort of snerked and wrote on it, "Same to you, Mr. Z!" He also signed the other 8x10 I had with Richard's sig on it. Oh, then I got to take a photo with him! His handler was there taking the photos -- I made sure it was set on auto this time so there was a flash. Jamie actually got up and walked around the table to pose with me so there was blank wall behind us. As he walked over, he noticed my Threadless shirt (the empty toilet paper tube with the text, "What would Macguyver do?") and laughed and said he really liked the shirt. Heee! Unfortunately,I hadn't really eaten except for some food at the dining hall, so my blood sugar was low by that point -- which basically resulted in hand tremors, so it's possible that Jamie thought I was super-nervous 'cause my hands were shaking like crazy. No, really, I just needed foods :x He was really, really nice though and I'm glad to have been able to meet him.

There was a tiny little incident during the signing... at some point, stuff fell out of my pockets, and I just didn't notice that my Bluetooth headset fell out. I discovered it was missing while I was on the main floor putting all my stuff away. Freaked out a bit and went over to the guys guarding the down stairs and explained the situation. They let me go up so I can ask and when I got to the top of the steps, I told another girl there and someone had already turned it over to her, so I got it back without too much fuss. *phew*

After the autographs, [livejournal.com profile] ozw and I headed down to the Dealer's Room to pick up my coat from Pendragon Costumes. I had commissioned a wool version of their Gunner Trench and Nicole had finished it just before con, so I decided to just pick it up at the convention rather than have it mailed. Anyway, I tried it on just to make sure it fit well and... yeah, it is awesome. The guy at the booth told me that they had never done one in wool before, but they really love and that someone saw it on the rack today and wanted to know how much it was XD And then Nicole told me she loved it so much that she almost wrote me to tell me she wasn't going to hand it over. Hah! I have since sent her photos of my in the coat and she wants to use them on the site.

We met up with [livejournal.com profile] yukiyoshi and this guy Bryan then. Took a quick spin around the Dealer's Room. There were a couple of vendors selling over-priced Doctor Who toys, so I sort of skipped over them. Came across one vendor with a table full of all the Character Options items and I just had to get the Suited Tenth Doctor figure. It was $25, but it's pretty much impossible to find now, so I figured what the hell, and got it. Didn't really look too closely at the other tables; just sort of poked around a bit before we headed back outside.

It was kind of late by that time and we were all a bit zoned out. However, with NO ROCKY HORROR OR VOLTAIRE this year (I know, wtf) we weren't exactly sure what to do with ourselves. Eventually we decided to go in search of food -- [livejournal.com profile] ozw and [livejournal.com profile] yukiyoshi needed to go grocery shopping, so I went with them to Waldbaum's. Picked up a couple apples, a chocolate bar, and a Lunchables meal that I ate for dinner. Exciting, I know. We went back to Oz's to eat and watch a bit of TV -- Best Week Ever was on. [livejournal.com profile] alorarose came back a bit later, with [livejournal.com profile] seijitataki following not to far behind. Blew up the air mattresses and went to bed.

well i'm sure there are SCAs involved, but i just go in period costume :op

the one exposure i had to an SCA they were all...creepy. and being as i was actually a medieval history major, i knew that they were being purposefully inaccurate. and well, did i mention they were creepy?

kinda put me off them. i do yearn for an SCA group that doesn't give me the twitches...

Heh. The SCA people I've run into are all pretty cool. Besides, Society for Creative Anachronism? I think that says it all.
