firefly: flanvention
Dec. 12th, 2006 07:37 pmWow, okay, it's been ages since I've made a really long Firefly related post, but I think this topic deserves it. For both of these topics, I'm sure I am way out of the loop and you've all heard about it already, but I'm slow and this is just for my own records.
But first: Alan Tudyk reads Wash's Euology at Dragon Con 2006
And all right, now I'm going to go about reporting the events of Flanvention II as if I were following it along (except I really just heard about it last week from
thebigfatman). My brain is small and I want to really remember this event and the outcome because there really isn't anything like our Big Damn Heroes. Also, it's really interesting to see how a community behaves in the face of a con. Heh.
From the reports, there had been whispers about Booster Events having financial troubles and that they perhaps took out a loan so Flanvention 2 can go forward. Whatever the case, there was an announcement that the con was going forward. A few days later, there is some other scare about the convention venue being cancelled, oh but just joking, it's not.
On December 8, mere hours before the convention is supposed to start, Booster Entertainment announces that they have to cancel due to "unforeseen circumstances."
But screw them, because the California Browncoats had a backup bash ready to go! Many of the cast (including Alan Tudyk, Adam Bladwin, and Nathan Fillion) show up at the venue anyway. (Browncoat Bash photos)
The next night, I believe a special super-secret outing was organized and it involved special bracelets and colored buses and a decoder ring. One of those is made up. Anyway, they were all loaded up onto a bus where they were taken to La Catina -- a new restaurant/club owned by Clare Kramer & her husband. Nearly all of the Firefly cast attended, as well as a few other Mutant Enemy actors. Veronica Mars' Michael Muhney also crashed the party.
Sounds like a really, really awesome time came out of what could have been a completely crap weekend.
Jewel Staite blogs about the cancellation and the fact that she was supposed to be there (Uh... spoilers for SGA in her blog)
And if you are not spoiler-feart, what she has to say about SGA is pretty damn funny. And she makes a good point about it too.

I should be in LA at the Flanvention right now, but as all of you know, that's been cancelled at the last-LAST minute, and so here I sit in Vancouver, wondering what could have been. Sigh. I am so disappointed! I was really looking forward to coming down and seeing everybody once again, having some of my favorite sushi, shopping, and partying with you Flanners, but unfortunately, it just wasn't in the cards. Don't ask me what happened...I truly have very little idea of the actual facts of it...but please know that if I were in LA right now, I'd still come and say hi. Without going into it too much, a lot of us lost quite a bit on this thing, so you're not the only ones (I actually declined an invitation to another event altogether and had to reschedule some other things that were very difficult to get around, but I really wanted to come). What else can I say? It fuckin' sucks. I hope you guys have a great time at the hotel anyway, and hopefully it'll work out next time.

Date: 2006-12-13 01:50 am (UTC)Two: I'm so, so glad the cast showed up and people weren't totally screwed when they canceled it last minute. Jewel's post made it seem like she was not a happy camper either. But I'm glad the people got to hang out and chill with the actors, anyway. Been keeping up with the FW post, and yeah, BE be stupid. Though,

Date: 2006-12-13 03:58 am (UTC)Dude, I somehow feel empowered that my Gargoyles convention has had it's bumps but we have NEVER canceled!
Never hire a company to do a Fandom's job, I say! ;)
