Right, so... before the movie, I of course had to run into Best Buy because all three seasons of The Pretender were on sale for $14.99 each. At that price, it would be silly to buy just the one and if you get two, well you might as well get all three. I saved over $54. Sweeet. Also picked up the Pirates 2 soundtrack, as it was on sale and there are two bonus trracks. That rave remix scares me, though...

At some point during this Best Buy venture, I met up with [livejournal.com profile] mcmi11ions and Annalisa, and the later her boyfriend as we made our way through the mall. There were some sales, so we made a couple stops. Okay, right, so after dinner at Houlihan's, we were off to see Superman Returns!

Before I get into it, tv/movie previews: SPIDER-MAN 3!! Lady in the Water looks interesting, now that the premise of the film has been explained to me. Fallen looks like it could be a good series, except it's on ABC Family, so that instantly removes some of the cool factor. I might give it a watch. Accepted looks kinda funny. The other trailers were sort of blah.

Now on to Superman. I saw the original movies a long, long time ago so I really don't even remember much except bits here and there. I certainly don't remember the first one or second one, except for that roof top scene and then the four generals. A few parts of Superman Returns felt like call backs that I just didn't get. Erm. I need to go watch those old movies again.

Bryan Singer -- I don't totally forgive you for ditching X-Men, but I'm less mad because this movie? Was so full of awesome. With two minor issues: Kate Bosworth isn't mature enough or gutsy enough to play Lois Lane and the movie felt a bit long. Very, very good, but sort of long.

And now... spoilers!

I loved the opening credits. LOVED. I'm pretty sure I turned to Matt and said, "this is already ten times better than X3." They picked an awesome style and I love that they kept the original music. LOVE.

Wow, what can I say about this movie? I was never a Superman girl. I thought the costume was absolutely ridiculous and the cape? Man, the cape just gets you in trouble (okay, okay, except in that one scene it was sort of useful). Just generally wasn't interested in the comics or the franchise and the Superman/Clark Kent thing was sort of dumb. He is wearing glasses people. Speaking of which, I'm amused that they sort of pointed out the glasses thing a couple times -- once with Jason and another when Lois dumps her purse all over the floor.

Oh, man, don't get me started on Lois. I didn't love Margot Kidder as Lois, but she was definitely the sort of person Lois should be. You can't get to be the top reporter at a metropolitan newspaper by being quiet and mousey -- you need to be assertive and aggresive. Hell, even Teri Hatcher was a better Lois than Bosworth. I mean, okay, my opinion might be a bit tainted with the Bosworth-hate, but I admit that she wasn't a complete disaster in the movie, she just felt a bit too young for the role of seasoned reporter. She looks younger than I do!

Jason. The asthmatic kid. Who is really Superman's son. Like we all didn't see that one coming. I did enjoy the killing of the guy by crushing him with a piano. If there are future films, I hope they bring the kid back because it would be interesting to see. They mention that Superman has been gone for five years, but Jason looks about 6 or 7 -- so what gives? The only way I can fanwank that is to say that because he's Superman's son, he's aging a bit faster than a normal child? I have no idea.

James Marsden was... well, I liked him. And it sucks that Cyclops had to get killed because someone was bitter that he went off to do Superman, but screw it dude, you had a way better part in a way better movie. I liked that Richard White was acutally a nice guy. He's so nice, in fact, that I think he should ditch Lois and find a woman who would actually appreciate how nice he is, because Lois is always going to be comparing him to Superman and how can anyone compare to that?

Posie Parker was cool as Kitty. I kind of wished that maybe she'd ditched Lex to go find Superman, but that's just me. She dumped those crystals on the ground so... they either fell in the water (major bad) or are now off floating in space... which sucks for Superman. Because his fortress got broken into by Lex and all the knowledge of his home planet is gone.

Peta Wilson was the speaker on the airplane!! *loves*

That scene were Superman is getting the crap kicked out of him is really sad. However, that scene on the rooftop where the thug shoots him in the eye? Was fraking awesome. Some guy in the theater says really loudly, "He's the Man of Steel! Don't play that!" XD That was funny.

Kevin Spacey is the man. I absolutely loved the part where Lois is on his boat (who sneaks on to a creepy boat with their kid?!) and Lex walks out of the bathroom with a toothbrush in his mouth and mumbles, "Lois Lane?" and Jason goes, "you're bald." Bwah!!

Nitpick: I dig the totally retro feel of the film, but what is up with the flat screen TVs and laptops and cellphones and Jimmy's digital SLR?! This is like a crazy alternate universe that got stuck in the 70s.

Love, love, love all the flying sequences. I hated the costume a little less. I still don't understand a grown man in blue spandex and red shorts, but the muted colors helped a lot as did the leather cape. Superman flying in this movie is like Spider-Man webslinging -- I just won't get tired of it. Of course, I reserve the right to mock Superman's flying pose.

I haven't even mentioned him yet, geez. Brandon Routh as Superman and Clark Kent? So, so awesome. I think most of the awesome comes from the fact that he got Christopher Reeve's pre-established mannerisms and speech patterns down. He even looks so much like Reeve, it's scary. He didn't have a lot of lines, but I guess that's all right. I think he pulled a lot of the same facial expressions that Reeve would have and I really liked the scene at the end where he's saying to Jason the same things his father had said to him (via recording). When Jason gorws up, I bet he'll have the powers without that whole pesky kryptonite fear. Then again, he needs an inhaler after running down a hall, so....

There is probably more, but my brain is runny. In conclusion: Movie good. Bosworth bad. No Singer hate.

Y'know, I read/watch the reviews from the pros and I'm getting mixed messages. I go to my flist and I read almost verbatim what I said in my own review. lol I love my flist. *G*

I also love how despite the flaws, everyone is walking away going "OMG, so pretty! LOVE Brandon! Not so much with the love for Kate!" lol

You should come join [livejournal.com profile] so_very_pretty and flail with us and make pretty superman stuff for us. :D

Yay Superman! I liked that they used the same opening credits font as the earlier Superman movies, but it hurt my eyes to try and read. And SO glad about the music - it just wouldn't be the same without the John Williams theme.

The suit made more sense this time, especially with the whole "possibly made of some sort of really thin but really tough gore-tex type material", and I wonder if a leather cape would spill around him the same way a fabric one would? Hm.

Superman, as a character, doesn't have a whole lot of range. He's the Man of Steel - he has to be stoic in nearly everything. The only time he shows emotion at all is when he's really, really upset. That's how I always felt about him, so it's kind of difficult for an actor to really put his own spin on the character without it becoming a different character. Brandon Routh was very good though - he really did pick up Reeves' mannerisms, and that was fun to watch.

Nyte made a comment that it was stupid for him to go up out of the atmosphere to try and listen to the world/Metropolis, when there's no way that sound waves could have reached him up there. Silly boy! Science isn't for movies! Hehehe.

OMG, Kevin Spacey. OMG. Love. So much love. That was my favorite scene of the whole movie, I think.

Poor James Marsden. He keeps getting 'the other man' characters, when he actually would be a great lead. On the other hand, he's adept enough to make us like the 'other man' and actually root for him. Richard was definitely a decent guy, but he HAS to know that Jason's not his. What, did he and Lois shack up the same week that Superman left? You know it took her a couple of months to realize he wasn't coming back, and then she'd have to be into her second trimester. Not to mention, of course, the "Man of Steel, Woman of Tissue Paper" debate. But that's ew. And long.

I <3 Kevin Spacey.

It's been years since I watched either of the first two Superman movies, and I don't remember that much of them (though more of the first one). Definitely a good addition to the set, though. Agreed that the flying sequences were glorious. The kryptonite thing isn't a fear, it's some other damn thing to do with the kryptonite being radioactive or some such and Supes being sensitive to it because it's specific to his home world -- something comic-booky like that. As for the glasses thing, what I can remember having read at some point was that supposedly in the comics it's been explained that Superman is actually using a sort of low-level telepathic fuzzing thing to keep anyone around him from noticing the Superman/Clark resemblance.

Yeah, the kryponite kind of... takes away his superpowers and basically makes him like any other human.

I haven't heard the telepathic theory. I always thought they just made everyone complete morons and when they thought the readers couldn't take it anymore, Clark revealed his was Superman to Lois and then they got married :x

Apparently there are fifty jillion color-coded types of kryptonite that do different things. I gather the Smallville show played with this a bit by having red K sap his inhibitions or some such while the regular green K can kill him. I forget the kind that usually supposedly takes his powers away.

And I'd agree that having Clark sneak around his nearest and dearest would really get wearing on the readers after long enough, especially when they were known to be intimates of Superman and hence the secret identity thing wasn't protecting them. (Which is why I appreciated that Spider-Man 2 had the three people closest to Peter knowing his secret identity by the end of the film, since that was showing a lot of cases of people getting hurt by the secrecy.)
