nyc holiday; fandomy links
May. 30th, 2006 09:19 pmSunday & Monday I was in NYC. Had a lot of fun, did a lot of walking, and met
lilorphanannie! :D
Got up at the crack of dawn and drove down to Poughkeepsie to catch the Metro North to Grand Central Station. The drive was pretty easy, and between the two of us (my mom and I), we saved about $150 doing that instead of taking Amtrak. Damn you, Amtrak! Went to the Roger Smith hotel and checked our bags -- check in wasn't until 3pm, so we were about 5 hours too early.
Since I wasn't meeting
lilorphanannie until some time later, my mom and I went to the Sixth Avenue flea market -- uh, it was really disappointing. There were about a dozen vendors there and not one of them had anything really interesting. I did manage to find a B'z CD for $3, though. After that, we decided to head to Canal St. to have dim sum at the Golden Bridge. Very busy place, but the food was good. Wandered around Chinatown for a bit. Went to the Elizabeth St. Shopping Center where I finally found a Hidamari No Tami! For $5 XD Well, okay, so it's a knock-off, but who the hell cares?
There was also a store that sold Mari Mari Marimo -- some freaky green ball of algae in a jar. Next door to that was a place that sold plants in a tube. I.... kinda wanted one.
After Canal Street, we went back to the hotel. Watched some TV before
lilorphanannie, her sister, and their friend Holly came by. We had a little time to chat (I gave out birthday gifts!) before they had to leave to catch another show. At about 7:30p, my mom and I headed to 42nd Street to see the Manhattan-henge sunset thing. It was.. eh.. disappointing. There were a lot of people standing in the road with us -- luckily, they were doing some sort of construction, so there was a barricade in the left two lanes, and a bunch of people were gathered there. Anyway, I was in a really crappy spot and didn't get anything. My camera took some photos of really pale, pink sky. Meh. Walked around a bit more before heading to the hotel and getting some sleep.
Monday morning we got up and went down for breakfast. Yay, free breakfast! Mostly just the usual like bagels, toast, and cereal. Filling. We checked out of the hotel and headed for Build A Bear. On the way, we passed some street fair going on -- we had no idea it was an all season thing. Anyway, after we found out the thing stretches for 15 blocks, we decided to go to Build A Bear first. Sadly, it wasn't nearly as cool as I thought. I did but two outfits, though -- one was a scuba set for Shep!Bear! That's pretty much all I did there. My mom and I went back to the street fair and walked around for naother couple hours. It was hot out. Like.... really hot. I was pulling Rodney-strength whining something fierce.
Took the train out of Grand Central at about 2pm, got to Poughkeepsie about 4pm, and was home about 6:30pm. After dinner, I headed over to
pgnblade and
thebigfatman's for s'mores and then played a couple games of Chez Geek. Which is... interesting. Heh. Came home, checked some e-mail and went to bed. Exciting!
Uh... I just got a notification saying that my bandwidth on astrumignis.com went over 5GB today. The frak? I have nothing huge on there -- all my MP3s and mixes are down, so what gives? I dig through the stats and I find that the day X-Men 3 came out, my Logan/Rogue video from like 6 years ago got over 130 hits >_< That translates to nearly 1.3GB. Following that, there's the smaller After the Flesh X-Men video I did that's eaten up about 366MB of bandwidth. Ooops. Good thing they don't charge me for overage.
For amusement,
pgnblade passed on this link to a clip from Robot Chicken: Darth Vader Calls the Emperor
Subject line from recent spam: Ford, you're turning into a penguin. Stop it. (*pointed look* Several of you are thinking the exact same thing right now.)
voluse linked to an older SGA-related entry about John Sheppard's view of women, in particular his view of Teyla. There is possibly a slight John/Teyla slant to the thing, but not so much that I didn't enjoy it and agree with many of the points.
Geeks reenacting Marvel Secret Wars. Oh. Dear.
Fox has apparently confirmed X-Men 4. WHY?! And if so, please don't bring back Ratner.
In related new, Brett Ratner wants Ian McKellen to play a Rush Hour 3 baddie. Yeah... good luck with that.
