avi to dvd help

amezriAm I deeply retarded? I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get a divx avi to burn to a DVD properly. I figured I have to convert it and have now downloaded and installed every conversion software known to man and I still don't get it! One avi file is converting to over 3GB of data. WTF?!
Does anyone know how to get more than one or two one hour episodes of a show on to a DVD? Somewhere around 4, at least.
Can I just convert the avi to a VCD mpg and then burn that? *confused* Do I have to have an ISO file?
