s:a&b; weekend; batman begins!!
Jun. 14th, 2005 12:07 amSpace: Above and Beyond coming to DVD this summer. Maybe. Woohoo! It's apparently going to be a Best Buy exclusive (like Tru calling season 2??) for a bit before it hits the other retailers.
David Hewlett received his birthday present and sent along a special thank you to the fans. How much do we love Hewlett? Thiiiiiiiiiiiiis much!
Right... so, I started this entry 6 hours ago and got totally derailed. More details about why after I finish the entry...
Sunday I went to
queenmaab's. We watched "Dune," which was apparently where all the cool sci-fi actors worked. I liked it a lot and now I want to watch the DVD of the new version that I bought but never watched. While I was there, I worked some more one QM's scarf, even though it's a gazillion degrees outside. Maybe by the time I finish, it'll be winter again. We also watched Firefly, which is always good fun. We make it up to "Shindig," which is one of my favorite episodes.
Right, so. Why I disappeared for 4 hours. Last week, I entered EQX's contest to win tickets to their "Batman Begins" premiere. I sort of forgot about it. When I checked my e-mail this afternoon, I saw a reply from them saying I'd scored the tickets and to get myself to the theater by 6pm. It was 5pm already. I spent 5 minutes thinking about whether or not I even wanted to go and then tried to figure out who would go with me on such sort notice.
seijitataki didn't want to go when he found it was for tonight, so I scanned my buddy list for people who were local and online. Kevin was the only one and he was free.
I got to Crossgates a little before 6pm and met Kevin there. I stood in line at the ticket booth only to be directed to the lobby. There was some hastle with figureing out where to get the passes, but it was figured out quickly. Got passes. Waited in line... listened to nerds behind us talking about how "Charlie & the Chocolate Factory" was stupid and how happy they were Michael Jackson was declared not guilty. Uhm. Whatever. Once in, the DJ's and interns spent about 20 minutes handing out free stuff - of which I won nothing cool. Oh well. At least I got a free mini poster and CD sampler from Equal Vision.
And now... the spoilers.
The whole opening sequence smacks of "We want to be cool like Marvel." DC now has their own nifty comic-like logo that Marvel used for "Spider-Man." The opening music also reminded me of "Spider-Man," in fact a whole lot of the score sounded similar.
Christian Bale makes an excellent Bruce Wayne. I'm not sure he's a great Batman, though. Something about the way he looks in the mask is a bit off. I dunno. Still, I really enjoyed his performance and if they decide to continue with this line of Bat-films, I hope he returns. He played it with just the right amount of humor, darkness, and that slight insanity that Batman has to have.
Liam Neeson asQui-Gon Ra's Al Ghul. Ahm. Meh. I guess. I was much happier once I found out Liam was Ra's and not Ken Watanabe - who is always awesome but definitely no Ra's. The movie frelled up the entire Ra's backstory anyway, so whatever.
I liked Michael Caine as Alfred. That's really all I have to say about that.
Morgan Freeman as Lucious Fox was appropriate, I think. It was a great casting choice and I really liked how the character sort of knew what Bruce was up to and happily went along with it.
Gary Oldman did not play a crazy psycho killer! *hearts* Don't get me wrong, I love Gary and his crazy roles, but I really enjoyed seeing him play one of the good guys. His Jim Gordon is much older than I really would have liked Gordon to be, but whatever. It really sets up the sort of partnership that Gordon & Batman have. Also, he got to drive the new Bat-tank!
Speaking of... I really didn't like the new Bat-tank-mobile-thing when I saw it in trailer, but seeing it in action on screen? It totally kicks ass. I love all the equipment they created and how it's all shiny but still a bit rough since he's new to it. The visuals of the film were amazing. Gotham City looked... well... gothic. The buildings really reminded me of the comics and the architecture was just perfect.
Katie Holmes.. was all right. Still can't look at her without thinking she has Tom Cruise disease. Ugh. I did like her character, though, and that she wasn't the totally standard damsel in distress - yeah, she couldn't take on two thugs, but at least she tried! And she had a taser!
Cillian Murphy as Crane/Scarecrow. Once again, backstory frelled, but I didn't mind so much because Cillian's eyes were creepy. Almost on an Elijah-like scale. He definitely had Crane-like mannerisms, though and the mask was great. I really liked all the maggots and things crawling out of his mouth during the fear-POVs.
Okay, I think that covers most everyone. That I can remember right now. So now I'll do a quick summary of the movie...in odd order.
Little!Bruce and Little!Rachel are playing on the grounds. Little!Bruce teases Little!Rachel and falls down well. Gets the crap scared out of him by bats. Daddy!Wayne is all understanding and gives him the big moral lesson. Some time later, the family goes out to the theater. Yes, it's that trip. The acrobats on stage remind Little!Bruce of the bats and he has a panic attack. Dad get family to leave and random mugger shoots the parentals. Yes, random mugger. Following a bit closer to the comic, I suppose, not involving the Joker.
So, there is much angst and Bruce returns from college to attend the hearing of the mugger and shows up prepared to kill him. Lead Gotham hitman does it for him. Rachel finds out what Bruce was going to do, slaps him twice. Oy. Bruce goes to mob bosses place trying to act all cool. Gets roughed up and decided to buy a bum's coat and go into a life of crime. To understand criminals. Uh huh. During one of his heists, he gets busted by the Chinese and ends up in a labor camp. A representative of Ra's Al Ghul springs him and tells him to bring Ra's pretty blue flowers. Bruce does so and learns the mad cool ways of the ninja. Bruce learns the skills and refuses to kill a common criminal. He sets Ra's place on fire, saves Qui-Gon, and returns to Gotham.
There's more origin whoha involving the development of the Batcave, Lucious giving Bruce gear for spelunking and base diving, and letting him test drive the Bat-tank. Dr. Crane shows up somewhere along the way. Crazy insane plan to poison Gotham's water supply develops and the mastermind is our Jedi Master. Lots of fighting ensues. Batman wins. Duh.
More happened, but I'm getting tired. Heh.
Needless to say, this movie was awesome and it's brought the film series back on track. I hope they make more and let the same crew do what they did here.
And I'm using my Tomination icon because if you don't have Tom's new CD, you should go get it.
