February 15, 2005 - The Living Room
11:00am
Well... this is an excellent start to trip two. My train is 40 minutes late, so I doubt I'll get there before frackin' 4pm. wtf. Hopefully we don't stop in the middle of nowhere again. That was annoying. In my boredom, have programmed my phone to call LJ and login automatically so I can phone post during the show with minimum fumbling. Whee!
Okay. The waiting? Is fucking bullshit.
1:00pm
OMG. My noon train just arrived and there are half a dozen children on the train screaming all around me. And the cabin smells like piss. Aggro.
3:30pm
Train just got in. Met Vaidah (
alorarose) and went to Canal St. I bought a few jade charms and saved two dollars through my minimal effort bartering. Go me? Vaidah and I wandered a bit looking for CDs stores that were actually open - found the DVD Asia store.. where I bought a Tanya Chua CD and two VCDs.
Wandered into Little Italy and had pizza. On the way to the Living Room, we walked past a big wall of ads saying "News, Sports, & Porn" on Broome St. I vaguely remember someone at the SUCO Help Desk talking about the News, Sports & Porn channel when I was there. Odd.
6:15pm
Waited outside the Living Room, after having walked past it. Oops. As we were waiting for them to let us in, Oli comes wandering up the street with his cello. He recognized me and thus there was a smile and a wave. We had a very quick chat about the weather, during which Oli made us paranoid about rain by looking up into the sky every so often. When he went to go in, the door was locked. He started tapping on the glass and peering in, gesturing at the guy at the bar to let him in. I think he may have said that he was playing there. Poor Oli.
On his way out and back down the block, he looked up again and said, "I think I felt a drop!" and we joked about how it wasn't rain and probably a bird XD
Tom came up the street a bit later, smoking a cigarette, and said hello. He was wondering why we were still standing outside and went to see if they'd let us wait inside.
7:00pm-ish
We snagged a front table and decided to see where Tom was. Chatted with Oli and then Tom before they both headed back out and, presumeably, to another bar for some pre-show drinks.
Vaidah and I heard the rest of Susan Enan's set, which was very lovely. I like her voice and her music, so of course I bought her Ep and asked her to sign it.
8:00pm
Milton was on again. They're all right, I guess. Somehow I liked them a bit better this time than last week. Must be growing on me.
9:00pm
The room filled up incredibly fast, so I'm very glad we had gotten a front table. Of course, that certainly didn't stop some skanks from dragging chairs to the side of our table and blocking all access to the stage. Oli practically had to climb over them (though they moved pretty damn quick for Tom) and had the nerve to look annoyed that they had to shift.
I liked our spot though, as it was a good view of the stage and Oli was sitting down by the corner waiting for Tom to start. It was a rather long wait, so I asked to take a picture of him just sitting there as I have no good pictures of Oli. Didn't want him to pose, but he did. We chatted a little about nothing and he fished around in his pocket to show me that he still had the charm I gave him.
While I was fiddling with the white balance on my camera, I snapped some good photos of his cello. Mmm. Cello. I've always had a cello fixation, shut up.
So.. then Tom came out and played an amazing set, as always.
1. You Only Disappear
"say hello to Oli."
2. Walking 2 Hawaii
Tom's all angsty over Valentine's Day.
3. Hear Me Now (that song we've been calling "fall into your arms")
phone post
Tom told a really long story about hummingbirds and beating and lazy fuckers in LA.
"That's five minutes gone - one song less."
4. Hummingbird
5. A & B Song
Oli rocks the cello on this song. The only song I like the cello more in is "Mermaid Blues."
"We like to pretend we can rock out. In Europe we can afford a band. I can't even afford a cello player, which is news to him, so if he leaves during the next song, you'll know why. I don't really impact on record sales. You may have watched the Grammys and may not have seen me, but you know, hey. That's just this lifetime."
There was guitar tuning here.
"This is perhaps the saddest song of the evening. There are now pills being served at the bar, razorblades available in the toilets, pieces of rope over the nearest beam. No, go on, please don't do that. That's just crazy."
6. It Ain't You
"Back to the songs about killing people."
7. Boy with the Bubblegun
"I see lots of familiar faces, so everyone who's come again, thank you. It's very kind of you."
Tom plays salesman and tries pushing CDs.
"Come find me if you want one. Like I said, I'll be under the bar--by the bar for a while. Come and say hi anyway."
8. Silent Boulevard
I made a phone post here but I can't be fucked to link to it. Here it is.
"Thanks for coming. We'll hopefully see some of you next week. And (?) buy a CD. I'm so bad at this salesman shit. That's why my record company hate me. It's okay, the feeling's mutual."
9. Language of Fools
After the Show
Met Erika finally! She was at the merch booth selling CDs. She mentioned that next week she'd have the first album as well as the Napster CD and some other things. I told her that Tom had a copy of the art book for her and to make sure she got it from him.
New album will be released in England in late-April/May. Still nothing definite on the US release, but hey - that's what imports are for.
Chatted again with Oli and waited for Tom. Found out from Erika that next week's show is definitely at 9pm. Said goodbye to Oli & Tom.
Went home with the Vaidah and didn't get to bed until 3am.
Caught the 1:11pm train to Penn and then the 2:45pm train home. It was a reserved, but the conductor let me on anyway.
