Also.. I think the problem with my mic is that it's too sensitive. You can hear my friends and I at the table snicker quietly, but and of the songs are all distored. Any ideas? Maybe if I wrap some foam around the thing or something...
Hey: What kind of mic was it you said? It came attached to the thing you're using to record, right?
What kid of distortion: static, too bassy, other? It was just Tom and cello Oli right? I usually don't have probs with distortion unless it's a really rocky/bassy show (I had some issues with Rachael Yamagata and her full band).
How close were you to the sound? And where was the location of the mic relative to the location of the amps/speakers?
Yes, you could wrap some foam around the mic to reduce interference. You can also search for sound proofing material at a local thrift store or if you must, a audio store (they charge more, of course). I learned the hard way that I had to monitor my own reactions (cheers, laughter, applause) just so that I wouldn't catch anything on my recordings. Finally, you may want to consider a mic with a longer cord, just so that you can situate it in a spot that is away from any potential noise.
