without a paddle; bourne supremacy
Aug. 21st, 2004 08:37 pmThese reviews are pretty non-coherent as I saw these movies 5 hours ago and have sort of forgotten a lot of details. *shrug*
During "The 20" for both films, they played a preview for the new WB series "Jack & Bobby." Check out the trailer where you can hear Tom McRae's "Stronger Than Dirt." Here's an interesting article about the show.
Without a Paddle
Deliverance references in the first part of the movie made me twitchy. ("We're at the corner of Bumfuck and 'He's got a real pretty mouth'.")
Looks like the critics are being pretty hard on this, but I thought it was funny. Love Seth Green in everything he does and Matthew Lillard was pretty good, too. Doesn't hurt that he's my new actor fixation. Dax Shepard is a bit iffy, but I was never a huge fan of his when he was on Punk'd.
The humor was pretty lewd and at times childish, I admit, but I enjoyed it. Laughed a lot - which is always good. I guess the plus side to Dax playing the irresponsible joker was allowing Matthew Lillard to be the take-charge guy, which can't be bad. After watching him on some interviews, I'd like to see him in other serious roles because I'm sure he could pull it off and be way less annoying than when he's comic relief. Speaking of... poor Seth Green.
Right from the beginning this movie had three pluses from me: filmed in New Zealand, music by Christophe Beck, and costumes by Ngila Dickson.
The music was pretty good, so I'm hoping someone somewhere is compiling a list of what was played. I really liked the "Black Betty" cover they had during the end credits.
The Bourne Supremacy
First of all: STOP with the handheld camera. It's okay in certain shots, but using them during action scenes make the scene really confusing and hard to follow and it also makes me naseous. When this cinematic fad fades, I'll be really glad.
Franke was in it for about 10 minutes before they killed her and even though I sort of liked the character in the first movie, I can see how she'd easily become really annoying. So, it was kind of sad to see her go, but it had to be done. I sort of wish Julia Stiles was in it more... all she did was act scared and flail around. I think it would have been more interesting if she'd advised them more about Bourne and how he operates.
Have to mention Karl Urban as Kirill. He was all.. thin.. and pale. And speaking Russian.
We learn that Bourne's first mission wasn't quite "official" and his real name is David Webb (I'd stick with Jason Bourne). Oh, and apparently he can beat you with a rolled up magazine. w00t!
The soundtrack was pretty unremarkable except for the Moby song "Extreme Ways" during the end credits. Might get the soundtrack disc for this one, since I never got the first. The themes from The Bourne Identity are reused and this film's score was a bit stronger anyway.
After the movies, we went to BJ's and bought some school stuff for my brother. He got hisself a new Epson printer. It's shiny. Then we went to Red Lobster for dinner. Ate too much. I don't want to look at any sort of food until somtime tomorrow... or the day after.

Date: 2004-08-22 10:38 pm (UTC)And Karl Urban was just definitely YUM in 'Bourne Supremacy'. I was shocked to see Marie [Franka's character] die and I'm really intrigued by 'David Webb' as of the end of the film. He's just so isolated and alone. I hope they make the 3rd film soon.
