Oh my God. I have conversations like that with my parents all the time.

I also applied for a NZ job and got turned down. I think it's tough to get a job there unless you know somebody. Or have an offer in writing.

Yeah, probably. They're pretty strict with working visas over there. Still, at least we can say we applied...

Wow. That sounds so much like a conversation I had with my Dad that it scares me. *hands you ice-pick* Here. Clearly his brain needs defrosting...

That's funny. I didn't think it was so complicated for him to work. *slaps self* I should just stick to bitching about my own father. Gomen.

My sister and I have been having conversations like that with our mother for years. Was he watching TV or something at the time? Mom tends to pull that zoning-out thing on us mostly when she's in front of the computer and gets distracted between the question and the answer...

Nope. We were sitting at the kitchen table and there was no other stimuli, for once. He was directing conversation at me the whole time. So I have no idea...

When Mom's on the computer I get the impression that she gets distracted or only half-listens to anything we say and doesn't really remember any of it. Or gets bored after we've said more than five words and starts tuning us out. Which basically leads to those conversations where she asks a question that proves she wasn't really listening before. She's not so bad nowadays -- could just be a parental defense mechanism to tune out chattering kids or something, given how many other people say their parents do the same. (I hear that husbands get the same way when their wives talk, paying just enough attention to occasionally make noises as though they're listening.)
