Listen, I respect someone's religion as much as the next religiously tolerant person, but this is really getting out of hand.

[edit: whoops, that was supposed to be cut...]

Vatican launches campaign against gay marriage

WTF? That's... I dunno. That's just not right. The article goes on to report that the Vatican is against same-sex adoptions because the child would face developmental obsticals due to the fact that they lack either a mother or a father. That's stupid. Are they going to now say something about single parents? And how is a family consisting of two adults who love a child and get along well worse than a married couple who fight all the time? Is that okay because they are a het couple and approved in the eyes of "God"? Like this line:

"Allowing children to be adopted by persons living in such unions would actually mean doing violence to these children, in the sense that their condition of dependency would be used to place them in an environment that is not conducive to their full human development," it said.

Because that's more violent than people who beat their children. Apparently the Vatican's okay with child abuse as long as you are heterosexual.

It said gay adoptions contradicted the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child, which holds that the best interests of the child are to be paramount.

So apparently they're saying they'd rather have the child rot in a third world country or an orphanage than to be adopted by two human beings who can provide love, food, and shelter. That's nice.

Why can't you people mind your own damn business?! It's not they're getting married and running around converting people to homosexuality. Only cults have the need to go around converting people and saying that their way is the only way and their god is the one true god. Oh... now, wait a sec.... here's a pen, connect the dots.

Bush made an announcement yesterday where he said "he wants to make sure marriage is defined strictly as a union between a man and a woman." Oh, but don't ostracize the gays because they're evil doers and sinners. ::rolls eyes::

"I am mindful that we're all sinners, and I caution those who may try to take the speck out of the neighbor's eye when they got a log in their own,"

That would have been more eloquent if it were proper English and he didn't sound like a red neck hick. You're there to run the country (or whatever it is they have you doing... maybe you just play with toys all day, I don't know) not enforce your religious beliefs on others. Surprisingly, Cheney had this to say in 2000:

"People should be free to enter into any kind of relationship they want to enter into," said Cheney. "It's really no one else's business, in terms of trying to regulate or prohibit behavior in that regard."

Or maybe not since his daughter is a lesbian.

This all just makes me sick. Can I get the next ticket out of here? I'll gladly leave my silly US Passport at the gate. I wouldn't want the embarassment of being from this country anyway. Whatever happened to the freedoms that founded this country?

On a sort of related topic, I don't know why people are all sorts of surprised that our soldiers are still being killed in Iraq. We invaded their country, set up a military presence, and have basically taken the place over. Don't forget about us bombing the hell out of all their cities, killing lots of civilians while Saddam and crew escaped. Oh, sure, we set-up a government (completely loyal to the US, I'm sure). And.. uhm... took lots of oil (those gas prices are still high, by the way). Last I heard, the electricity was still out.

So. Yeah. Iraqis running around shooting American soldiers? Not the least bit surprised. You can't go bomb a country, pretending to "liberate" them, take their oil, and install your idea of an ideal government and not expect people to be pissed. American arrogance, once again. I feel bad for the soldiers, as many of them don't want to be there in the first place. When the troops went in, they were lead to believe they would go in, do their job, and get out. They weren't emotionally and psychologically prepared to be there for months, maybe years. I'm sure the administration had a fair idea that military presence would be needed for a long while - they should have informed the people the sent in to do their dirty work. The fact that this war is costing $4billion a month is a bonus, right? Since we're already running a ridiculous deficit and Bush feels the need to give Joe Bob in the trailer park a $300 tax return.

Okay, okay. I'll shut up now.

I'm ashamed to be an American. I was brought up Catholic and denounced my religion as soon as I was old enough to do so. But you can't denounce your country, sadly.

I think I can be a political refugee, right? Since I'm pagan, I wonder if they'll start hunting us next. Then I can claim religious asylum. LOL

I am... absolutely gobsmacked that people can even be still proposing this kind of crap in the 21st century. That people still just can't keep their noses out of other peoples' relationships. Good lord. **sputter**

And lets not even get me started on the whole stupid fucking concept of "natural moral law". I don't believe, after a year of studying moral philosophy as an undergrad, that there is such a thing as 'natural' or 'universal' or 'intrinsic' moral law. Morality is, like most things, a social contract. That is why different social groups have different views on what is moral or immoral. (I am NOT claiming, btw, that actions like murder aren't immoral. Merely that common morality, our knowledge of what it does and does not consist of, is acquired socially, not biologically. It is not a hard-wired feature of the universe at large.)

Ok, I'll save you from my ranting now... ;) And I'd offer to let you be a US refugee here... but I doubt the situation here's that much better. *sigh*

It's quite sickening. Especially when most of the people in this country don't care or are swallowing everything Bush & Co. spew their way.

Maybe I can find my own island. With free cable TV and free internet access. LOL

he wants to make sure marriage is defined strictly as a union between a man and a woman.

You know, it's funny--wherever the technical term of "marriage" is defined, it's defined as an act of union between a man and woman. I can't remember if that's in the bible or where, but where ever that is, that's what it says.

I have no problem with gay marriages, though. It's funny how people make such a big deal of it, especially since marriage itself is seen as a discouraging road in general--I mean, who wants to get married when you get taxed out the ass? But as far as the benefits go, I think any couple, legally married or no, should have the same rights as married couples do.

Hmmm...I'm rambling. If this doesn't make much sense, you'll have to forgive me.:)

I think it's time people redefined the technical definitions. I mean, if "bling-bling" can make it into the Oxford dictionary, we ought to be able to remove the "man and woman" part of the definition of marriage.

I was rambling too, so it's okay ^_^

Ugh. I was fuming about this earlier, too. Never mind that there's ALREADY a law that prohibits gay marriage, now they want a CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT? XP I can only hope that in future years we'll look at happily married gay couples and wonder why it was even an issue.

People act like homosexuality is a new thing. It's been around for... eh... a really long time. I mean, Hercules had little boy toys on the side. Heh.

I was fuming yesterday when I posted a link about that in my journal. If that gets passed, I am so moving out of here... maybe to Canada or something. Between that and the school they're building in NYC to "protect" gay people from harassment, this country is taking a big step backwards instead of forwards.

I understand and respect everyone's right to their own opinion/beliefs, etc but what I don't respect is trying to force it on everyone and their brother - especially from someone in such high power as the president. He's just trying to take advantage of his power and that is about as wrong as it gets. And all that crap about how we're all sinners... since when is this a country based on religion? Meh. *kicks bush*

And now I'm off to my class on homophobia... this should be interesting.

This country is going down the crapper and I want out as soon as realistically possible.

Have fun at class :-D

This country is ALREADY down the crapper, flushed and in the sewers of life. It will remain that way until Bush and his buddies are gone. And quite frankly, I'm not surprised they're making a big deal out of this gay marriage thing. Between this and the new school opening in the city...I see gay segregation in the future if this keeps up...:-(

Yesterday my grandmother and I were getting annoyed with each other because she was seeing something on some news channel about the Democratic candidates and saying the Dems were no good and of course I disagreed. I said how bad Dubya was and you know what her main selling point was for re-electing him? "He's a good Christian."

Yeah.

Soo.. I guess that was okay too.

Of course, this is the Baptist grandmother, who told my sister that she's going to "burn when she dies" when Lauren announced that she doesn't believe in God. (Lauren wisely refrained from mentioning the experimentation with Wicca and even Satanism she was doing at the time.)
