Ranty reviews and commentary on the first three episodes. I don't remember the first two, but do remember the third. Cut for those not interested

1.1 Gone for Goode

First scene we get is Crosetti and Lewis at a crime scene with their usual snarky banter. The dialog on this series is one of my most favorite things. We get our first shot at the board - red for open cases; black for closed. Bayliss wanders in all green and is taken on a whirlwind tour of the department. Our first shot of The Box.

"No one stays fat down there for long." - Cemetery Manager

Bayliss goes on his first case - originally assigned to partner up with Kay. Felton gets reassigned to Pemblton - which thjey're both pretty pissed about. The scene in the garage with Frank forgetting where he parked and then proceeding to try the key in each car - yeah. "What if it's the next one?" he tells Beau. That sets up Pembleton's mentality - you can't give up because you never know when the next one is the one.. but even if it's not he's too much of a dick to let it go and is probably just doing it to piss you off :D

Steve Harris (later plays Eugene in The Practice)! I'm always amused when I can spot actors. Also, Munch's "I am not Montel Williams. I am not Montel Williams!" speech - so typical Munch.

Bolander: [holding a cigar] It's still got the, uh, little wrapper on it.
Munch: You practicing safe smoking?

Crosetti's letter to whoever accusing Lewis of racial slurs against him and "his people" was fairly amusing as they all slurped down crab with Kay correcting the letter. I don't think Crosetti ever turned it in.

Bolander, Lewis, and Munch are standing around talking outside when Bolander notices a dark figure checking them out for a mugging. Munch walks over, flashes his badge and tells the guy, "hey, we're police. Go rob somebody else."

The episode ends with Bayliss picking up his first call and visiting his first site as a primary.

1.2 A Ghost of a Chance

Fantastically written scene with Bayliss at the crime scene looking over Adele's body. Bayliss seems alone, freaking out over what he's supposed to do and not being able to handle the sight of the body. The guys are there telling him to release the body and let the scene go. He won't leave, though, thinking there is more that he can/should do. Finally, Giardello arrives and tells Bayliss to let it go.

Once again, love the banter between Bolander and Munch. Iguana-style. XD These light scenes between the heavily depressing ones are nice.

The B plot of this episode was an old married couple; the wife pretty much just wanted the husband dead. She reported that he died of a heartattack, but when he wakes up, she flips out. "Die you bastard!" "You first, bitch!" *snerk* Gotta love those crazy old people.

Recurring character Officer Chris Thormann is played by Lee Tergesen, who later plays Chett in Weird Science.

Bayliss is having adjustment and leadership issues - especially since he has no desk. He finally snaps at Giardello and demands a desk. G swipes everything off the nearest desk and tells Bayliss that he's got one now. Bayliss does seem to take on more responsibility - or at least exudes the confidence that he was lacking - immediately after he got his office furniture.

Plot C involved Kay hearing the voice of a homicide victim telling her wear the murder weapon is. The guys don't believe her and mock her. But when they finally catch the guy, Felton tells Kay that he used tarot cards.

Crosetti and his on-going search for the truth about Lincoln's assassination. Mildly entertaining.

1.3 Night of the Dead Living

This was mildly appropriate since it was ridiculously hot out today.

The episode was a small peek into the lives of the homicide detectives. Felton's having problems with his wife. Bayliss is having inadequacy issues. Giardello is sweating his cajones off. Howard's sister has a tumor. Munch is fighting with.. whoever. Bolander can't ask the ME out on a date. Crosetti's having problems with his kids. They find a baby in a cage in the basement and there's a Santa running around.

All in all, a damn interesting episode packed with lots of nice little things and side conversations. Like G trying to get Pembleton to take off his tie and Felton trying to figure out who lights the candle by the board.

I'd have more intelligent things to say if it weren't 2:33am.

For now, it's time for bed. Goodnight people!
