September 11
Sep. 11th, 2002 01:54 pmListen. I don't mean to be insensitive, but this is getting ridiculous. I understand that this is the one year anniversary of 9/11 and a lot of Americans died and suffered and I offer my deepest, heartfelt condolences to anyone who lost friends and family.
BUT. I am sick of the media and the world in general using this as some sort of tactic to boost ratings. CNN et al haven't let this go since it happened. Movies are getting publicity because they're removing sequences featuring the Two Towers (which is utterly ridiculous in itself). My school has built a memorial between the Fine Arts building and Fitzelle. This is in the middle of nowhere-campus. It's an ugly stone thing in the shape of the buildings and there are flower-like things where the planes hit. This was basically a publicity stunt for the school - all the local press has been covering it. The memorial will be filmed and I suspect the tapes will be sold.
Maybe I'm just a jaded bitch, but I don't really care. I mean, I care that people died and that people are suffering, but I really don't give a frell about all the surface stuff. People want to make September 11th a national holiday, meanwhile, they're trying to censor everything with the Two Towers on tv and film and showing Taliban training videos on cable news. Propaganda, I tell you.
There are many nations that face terrorist acts everyday. Could you imagine what would happen if they stopped and had a moment of silence for every single vicious act committed against them? Now, I'm not saying that we should ignore it, but we need to move on, people. Let the families grieve in their own way. I'm sure they have had enough of being reminded everyday of what happened to their loved ones and don't need more media shoved down their throats.
I dunno. I'm just not really feeling this whole thing. It seems a little orchestrated and stunt-y. And I don't appreciate it.
Don't flame me. Or do. I don't care.

Date: 2002-09-11 12:43 pm (UTC)Honestly, I am in the middle here. I think they are over milking it... but I would be just as annoyed if they only mention it in passing. I realized today that I am still in shock. This whole thing still just amazes me. The feeling of "how did we let this happen". I thought I was over it, until today.
I think that their intentions for today were good... but you know what they say about good intentions... ::shrugs::

But that's just me.
