I'm finally getting around to figuring out how this new ACA Women's Health Mandate affects my CDPHP insurance coverage. I should just call them during the week and speak to someone in the office, but I sort of keep forgetting. It took some digging and I still don't think I have all the right information, or if I do, it's not really helpful for me.

Good news: CDPHP Healthy New York is enacted the Women's Health Mandate as part of the ACA in the beginning of August. This includes covering birth control as part of the medical coverage, which means I don't need the drug coverage portion to have my birth control covered. That's great, because I don't.

Bad news: It's only covering generics or brands that don't have generics - as long as they are on their approved list. All others must be approved by CDPHP via a medical exemption form from your doctor and that can only be submitted if the drug is on their excluded list.

Worse news: Generess Fe (the pill I'm on) is on neither the approved or excluded list. Also, they somehow think there are generics for birth control pills that don't have generics (or generics that haven't been approved for release) and that leads me to believe they think "close enough is good enough" which isn't true, especially with hormone levels. Also, from what I can tell from varying feedback, generics of birth control pills often don't work the same as the brand name.
