movie: iron man 2
May. 7th, 2010 11:52 pmFIRST THING: IRON MAN 2 WAS AMAZING.
I was a little scared from a couple bad reviews I read, but eff those people. I loved this movie. True, it wasn't as amazing as the first, but this was still really great and I can't wait to go see it again!
Anyway...
Trailers were standard. I can't wait to see the new A-Team movie. I still don't get the point of Inception. I mean, I do, but... whatever. OMG THE AIRBENDER RAGE. Honestly, if they'd cast the film properly, it would have been kick ass, but now it's just sad and I'm not going to see it. OH! Super 8. I have no idea. It's very Cloverfield, with the giant mystery monster. JJ loves his kaiju.
ON TO THE IRON MAN TALKING!
SPOILERS BELOW. FOR REAL.

First of all, let me say that I love that they started with the audio from the end of the last film, with Stark at the press conference. And I love that they used it to set up a timeline for when Ivan started his little mad scientist project in Russia. I was disappointed that they cut the scene they have in the trailer with Pepper giving Tony a send off by kissing the helmet and pitching it out of the cargo bay ("You complete me!") but I guess their relationship development plays better without it there or something. I dunno. I wanted that scene! Hopefully it'll be on the DVD as Favreau promises.
I know there are some people who were not happy about Rhodes having to be recast, but whatever. I think Don Cheadle is FULL OF WIN anyway, and he did an awesome job as Rhodey. I never felt like Terrence Howard's Rhodes could really step up and deal with Stark, but Cheadle's Rhodey is more believable to me. Having to deal with Stark every day must make you kind of haggard even though he's your best friend, and I think Cheadle conveyed that well.
Speaking of casting, when I heard that Scarlett Johansson was playing the Black Widow/Natasha Romanoff, I was apprehensive, but you know what? I was wrong and she totally kicked ass. She didn't take any crap from Tony and I think Pepper ends up being a fan and if Pepper's a fan, I'm cool with it! And when she was in Black Widow mode? Wow. YES. Kick ass! During that scene where she starts to take charge with Pepper, I turned to
smashedrecords and said, "I'd watch that movie." Two women kicking ass and taking names? I'm there.
PEPPER POTTS. ILU! She is just so awesome and is trying to deal with all of Tony's crap. She's finally putting her foot down now that he's made her the CEO of Stark Industries and it's great because she won't take any of his crap even though she totally loves him. The scene in her office where Tony comes in to apologize with STRAWBERRIES OF DEATH and he is asking if she can stop that kinetic toy from spinning and she is all "gtfo of my office," was just so... I loved it. They banter so well. Actually, I really loved that scene during the final fight where Natasha accidentally lets drop that Tony was dying and Pepper is all, "omgwtf why didn't you tell me you were dying! I am so mad at you!" and Tony says he was going to make her an omelet and tell her and Natasha is all "omg you guyz get a ROOM!" PLUS there was that KISS at the end where Pepper was trying to resign. AHHH!!!
*cough* Right. I'm better now. I just... Love my Tony/Pepper 'ship.
Sam Rockwell as Hammer. Uhm. Well, he didn't look like himself to me for whatever reason. He kind of reminded me of Gary Oldman in The Fifth Element. From the trailers, I kind of thought it was Gary Oldman... But anyway, Hammer was the perfect wannabe sleaze. And him getting arrested? Deserved it. I was really hoping Pepper would punch him in the face, but I guess she's above that.
I WANT ALL OF STARK'S DISPLAY SURFACES. That transparent LG smartphone he had in the Senate hearing was gorgeous, as was that touch table display and that insanity going on in his workshop! WANT. IT. NOW. Come on, people, how far away are we from that? Get to work!
While we're talking about tech, in the scene where we see Natalie/Natasha for the first time, Tony goes and sits next to Pepper... who seems to be holding and using an LG EnV2 (or EnV3, can't tell). If that's what she had... WHY? I mean, I like my EnV2 when it's not being gimpy, but it's not even close to a smartphone and wouldn't an organized professional such as Miss Potts need a smartphone for all her work needs?!
When Stark was creating the new element in his lab, was there a reason he had to place the new piece all the way across the room? I'm sure there is some pseudo science about it needing to be a 90 degree angle or whatnot, but still. He's basically destroying the place. And...now that I think of it, wasn't there a scene in the trailer where he's working on this and it blows up? Hrm.
I liked that backstory they added with the Stark Expo and the stuff with his dad. SAD PANDA!
I'm sorry, I just didn't care for Whiplash. Like, I see how they got there with this character for this storyline, but I really didn't care. At all. Boohoo, Russian kid. Actually, it was your dad who was kind of the asshole.
War Machine vs. Iron Man! WHAT? Awesome. Both times, actually, in the mansion and at the Expo. I was kind of confused about how Rhodes could wear the Mark II suit without a reactor but... I guess Tony put it in because he knew he was going to get crazy drunk at his party and force Rhodes to wear it and fight him?! I don't even know.
Nick Fury was snarkastic and awesome and... honestly, I think Samuel L. Jackson just has to show up, be himself, and awesome occurs.
So glad Happy got more screen time in this one. He's great! With the boxing snark and the fighting the one dude while Black Widow takes out EVERYONE. And hitting Whiplash with the car. REPEATEDLY.
And on the topic of awesome: TONY STARK. The guy can totally be a self-absorbed asshat, but I LOVE HIM and his ridiculousness. He's just.. I want one. Really. Well, okay, maybe the cleaned up version that Pepper gets at the end of this movie. No one really wants to keep the Stark before he was Iron Man. Or when he was on his downward spiral.
I think the way Marvel films are finally integrating each other is totally great. It was fun to see Captain America's shield again and have Coulson sputter about it because one assumes he knows Cap and is all, "wtf is this doing here?!" and Tony just needs it to level out a length of conduit. HA!
speakerwiggin pointed out the news report playing during the debrief at the end was Hulk fight on campus. And then there was the tag at the end of this movie leading into Thor with a shot of Mjollnir, Thor's hammer.
I totally forgot to comment on the one thing I dreaded THE MOST: Olivia Munn being in the movie. At first, I'd heard it was a minor role, and then her scenes were cut so they were being reshot. FEAR. There were rumors of her being Scarlet Witch, and that would put her in the Avengers movie, possible. Thankfully, she's just playing her dead-in-the-eyes self in a small cameo reporting on the Stark Expo. Crisis averted.

END SPOILERY STUFFS.
I am really sure there are things that I liked that I've forgotten to mention, but this is already out of control rambly and long. I am definitely going to see this movie again in the theaters, even if I have to go by myself!

Date: 2010-05-08 04:59 am (UTC)3. YES. I did think it was weird, especially with that suitcase suit that went over a racing suit. WHAT? In the first movie it was like he ONLY had room for those undersuits. Also, Rhodey took the suit home? How did he get out of it?? I think you still need a lot of help getting out of that thing. Ugh. The first one did a little better reigning in the comic book science. I think.
4. You should have gotten more because I've talked with you the most about this movie!

Date: 2010-05-08 04:11 pm (UTC)2. Yeah, I think it was a neat gag, but doesn't work at all with the science they'd previously established. I'm pretty sure it was just a window in the first movie, too. We should tweet Favreau and ask. LOL
3. Winnings? Uhm.... have a cookie.

Date: 2010-05-08 04:07 pm (UTC)There needs to be a Pepper Potts figure. Why is there no Pepper Potts figure to go with my Tony? (Actually, Art Asylum made a Pepper minimate, but still...)

Date: 2010-05-09 05:44 am (UTC)That scene was int he first trailer (http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/paramount/ironman/) and cut into some of the shorter TV ads. Favreau said he wanted Tony's reveal to be more dramatic so they redid the scene. He also promised it would be a deleted scene on the DVD.
