May. 27th, 2008 04:57 pmHe was bored. This was boring and he'd like nothing more than to get out of the lab and go grab a drink. Unfortunately, he was stuck here because Rhodey had asked him for a favor. It was probably a momentary attack of conscience that made him agree, feeling like he owed his friend something for causing all that trouble when he'd first built the suit. At the time, it seemed like it might have been an interesting trip: top secret government research lab with new and exciting technology. Rhodes had promised him all of these things and, well, okay, he couldn't say his friend hadn't delivered.
The problems was... well...
"Hey, are you paying attention or what?" an impatient voice snapped.
Stark looked up from the schematics he'd been staring at for a good five minutes. He blinked a few times before finally responding. "Huh?"
"Oh for the love of -- when the Air Force said they were going to send 'the best man for the job,' I should have set my standards a bit lower," the scientist huffed, while gesturing wildly with his hands.
With a smirk, Tony Stark leaned back and crossed his arms. "It's a little difficult for me to analyze anything in this lab if all you're going to do is give me incomplete schematics and restrict my access to anything that, oh, I don't know, doesn't seem to do anything more than glow. Doctor..."
"McKay! Doctor Rodney McKay! Aren't you supposed to be some sort of genius or something? You can't even remember something as simple as a name?"
Rolling his eyes, Stark slid out of the chair. He knew McKay's name; knew a lot more about the man than he was going to admit as well. The only entertainment he'd had for the last three days was annoying the other man while he was trying to do... whatever it was he was supposed to be doing. Rhodey said he'd been given special clearance in order to access everything here, but it didn't seem like the head of the science department cared much about that. In McKay's mind, Tony hadn't been cleared for anything.
"You!" McKay said sharply, snapping his fingers. "Get over here."
Stark shook his head. McKay might have been the resident genius on this base, but the man was rude as hell and it was a wonder someone hadn't "accidentally" shot him yet. Brushing the thought away, he walked around to the other side of the workstation as River Tam stepped around him, responding to McKay's call.
"She is not a dog to be called," River said in an annoyed tone.
"Yeah, whatever," Rodney responded dismissively. He gestured at the whiteboard. "Did you do this? You must have, because no one else is dumb enough to touch my equations and Mr. Stark over there probably doesn't even know what this is a formula for."
"The formula was erroneous. Needed adjustment," River said simply before turning away.
Rodney really started fuming then. "What do you mean 'erroneous'? Do you even realize what you did here? With this variable the whole thing would--" He stopped suddenly as it finally dawned on him what her correction had accomplished. "Oh. Huh."
Stark let out a laugh from his corner of the lab, covering it up rather poorly with a cough. It had taken some doing for Stark to convince Rhodes that he needed River with him. He left out the bit about her being from some point in the future or a parallel future and went with the "she's my genius apprentice and I'm rich and eccentric so humor me" story. Strangely enough, it had worked.
"Something funny over there?" Rodney snapped.
"Yeah, nothing," Stark smirked. "Just, you know, I figured that out ten minutes ago." Actually, he hadn't and he still didn't have a clue what all the math on the white board added up to -- just something about energy storage and zero-point energy.
Rodney narrowed his eyes at him. "Oh, please."
"It's true," River confirmed. "See the lights when they switch and his went on the fastest." River smiled at Tony conspiratorially.
"Come on, McKay. Throw us a bone.
