Mar. 31st, 2008 11:27 pmAnother costuming binge!
In this post: Updated Ravenclaw costume, fitted tactical vest, River boots, really, really lame River costume.
First up, I've updated my Ravenclaw costume. It was really bothering me the way I had it. I looked frumpy and weird and the proportions were all off. I didn't know if it was the skirt or what, but something needed fixing.
Before:
After:
Same skirt, same underskirt. I got a different shirt and added an off-white corset. I think it looks fabulous now. There's also a different belt to go with the wand sheath; the metal one was really crappy and it kept moving around. The wide, stiffer belt is a huge improvement.
A couple years back, I bought a tactical vest for an Atlantis costume, but the thing fit really terribly so it just sat in a closet. Well, Stitch over at ScifiHero was offering to fit them for people who needed them smaller and I totally jumped on that.
Before:

After:
Stitch did a really fantastic job! I'm going to be wearing it to ICON this weekend.
Next up, River's boots. This first pair is something I found that kind of matches the Serenity boots... except they're not black. I can live with that. They only cost me $40 and they're really comfortable.

And these are, I believe, a near exact match for the boots River wore in the Firefly series.

They're TUK A6215 Gladiator boots. Cost me about $100, but zappos.com offers free shipping and for whatever reason upgraded me to Next Day Air for free!! These boots are so awesome. For the series, it looks like the resoled the boot and removed the metal plate, as I did below:

I was so excited about these boots coming in, I braved a trip to the Salvation Army to see if I could find a last minute River costume. Oh. Em. Gee. I was able to piece together enough items to make an outfit similar to the one River wore in "Safe." It is so ghetto-fabulous, but I think it'll work and you kind of get the idea. So I'm wearing this at ICON (Masquerade or on Sunday) and also at my Browncoat Shindig in May.

First of all, that sweater is the wrong color and it's an XL. Then the pink skirt was a size 10 and the dark pink underskirt was a large, so I kind of pleated the waist of both skirts in some places to make it smaller. Fits all right now. I also frayed the edges of the sweater a bit, so it looks more distressed.

I really wanna rip the lace off that underskirt though. Blech.
As always, all costuming photos are here.

Date: 2008-04-01 08:04 am (UTC)Also, i love getting dressed up personally, and my favourite way is to assemble different parts like you do, rather than go out and buy a costume kit or something. It's awesome to see other people get into dressing up as their favourite characters!

Date: 2008-04-03 03:54 am (UTC)You know, everyone seems to love the River costume but it's just not right to me. Oh well. I guess as long as other people know what it is. heh.
