Another costuming binge!

In this post: Updated Ravenclaw costume, fitted tactical vest, River boots, really, really lame River costume.

First up, I've updated my Ravenclaw costume. It was really bothering me the way I had it. I looked frumpy and weird and the proportions were all off. I didn't know if it was the skirt or what, but something needed fixing.

Before:

After:

Same skirt, same underskirt. I got a different shirt and added an off-white corset. I think it looks fabulous now. There's also a different belt to go with the wand sheath; the metal one was really crappy and it kept moving around. The wide, stiffer belt is a huge improvement.

A couple years back, I bought a tactical vest for an Atlantis costume, but the thing fit really terribly so it just sat in a closet. Well, Stitch over at ScifiHero was offering to fit them for people who needed them smaller and I totally jumped on that.

Before:

After:

Stitch did a really fantastic job! I'm going to be wearing it to ICON this weekend.

Next up, River's boots. This first pair is something I found that kind of matches the Serenity boots... except they're not black. I can live with that. They only cost me $40 and they're really comfortable.

And these are, I believe, a near exact match for the boots River wore in the Firefly series.

They're TUK A6215 Gladiator boots. Cost me about $100, but zappos.com offers free shipping and for whatever reason upgraded me to Next Day Air for free!! These boots are so awesome. For the series, it looks like the resoled the boot and removed the metal plate, as I did below:

I was so excited about these boots coming in, I braved a trip to the Salvation Army to see if I could find a last minute River costume. Oh. Em. Gee. I was able to piece together enough items to make an outfit similar to the one River wore in "Safe." It is so ghetto-fabulous, but I think it'll work and you kind of get the idea. So I'm wearing this at ICON (Masquerade or on Sunday) and also at my Browncoat Shindig in May.

First of all, that sweater is the wrong color and it's an XL. Then the pink skirt was a size 10 and the dark pink underskirt was a large, so I kind of pleated the waist of both skirts in some places to make it smaller. Fits all right now. I also frayed the edges of the sweater a bit, so it looks more distressed.

I really wanna rip the lace off that underskirt though. Blech.

As always, all costuming photos are here.

Not to skip over the other really cool costume pieces, but that Atlantis vest mod came out very nicely! That makes a world of difference. A shame you lose a pouch (I'm assuming on each side) but I've never found the Atlantis ones to be nearly as useful/versatile as the SG-1 vest pouches.

Way to go Stitch!

Yup, one pocket from each side, but you're right -- it's an awkward shape for anything practical during a con event. Stitch did a really great job.

I always love seeing your costumes. You are so particular about the little details, I think it's great. All your costumes are either near carbon copies of the originals, or based on the originals with a bit of an individual flair (im thinking of the [is it flock or frock? i'm thinking flock] coat you bought that's not officially part of a costume, perse, but can be worked in to certain styles.

Also, i love getting dressed up personally, and my favourite way is to assemble different parts like you do, rather than go out and buy a costume kit or something. It's awesome to see other people get into dressing up as their favourite characters!

Thanks! :D yeah, the frock coat goes with the Ravenclaw outfit and makes it really piratey.

Costuming is fun! I wish there were more occasions for it.

Excellent adjustment to the Ravenclaw costume -- you're right, the line of shirt-into-skirt goes much better with the corset (I'm thinking because the shirt was so loose just sort of hanging out over the waistband like in the first picture). And your usual high caliber of work on the SG and River costumes.

Thanks! Yeah, the shirt I had before was too long and too loose and just fit really weird.

You know, everyone seems to love the River costume but it's just not right to me. Oh well. I guess as long as other people know what it is. heh.

Yeah, River Tam is one of those costumes where it's hard to pin down a look that really nails it in terms of being readily identifiable (or at least obviously a costume rather than just your personal fashion sense). Unless you pull something really obvious like carrying around a Reaper axe from the end of Serenity (or obviously a costume, like the leotard look from the beginning of the movie) you're going to have to depend on being in a fannish context.

nice work on the new shirt - it does definately improve it! it almost looks like the skirt is a smaller size! woah! (the skirt still rocks. too. hee ;)) can't wait to see it on Friday! :)

i still think your river costume came out great! it's not exact, but it'll do nicely. :)

totally going to need your help on the Alice wig and MQ wigs...i did manage to pin up the BS wig, though, and it's passable. i used all my pins, though. >_< now i have to go back to the store and get some. grr. i was going to get some, but CVS didn't have any black ones, anyway...

i really need to get my pictures in order...

Thanks! Yeah, I like it a WHOLE lot better now. Maybe I'll bring the outfit with me to D*Con. Who knows.

Thanks :) I do like the River costume, but... I'm waiting eagerly for the ones we're working on :D

Uh oh! We'll have to work on it Friday night!
