Watching the special on the History Channel right now.

We all know George Lucas pulled a lot of ideas from mythology. But all this bull about Lucas purposefully crafting a deeply, compelling movie using ancient myths seems to be stretching it... a lot. Can't we just say he ripped off all the great myths and smashed it together into a really expensive, shiny set of movies? Meh.

I think all of these people are reaching really far when they say that Star Wars is filled with strong women. And saying that Lucas made all these great mythological references.. when really, I think he was just ripping stuff off. (Noooooo... I don't have a hate on for Lucas.)

The Bush and Anakin comparison made me smirk though.

Spotted so far:
- Stephen Colbert
- Tom Brokaw (wtf?)
- Peter Jackson
- J. J. Abrams
- Joss Whedon (THE MAN!!)
- Newt Gingrich (wtf....)
- Dan Rather
- Linda Ellerbee (zomg what??)

I'm recording it to DVD... Looks really good, presentation-wise. It might be a stretch, but I still enjoy the show.

The problem with most art forms (and one of the things that seriously bugged me during my film school days) is that fair amount of the visual arts tend to be up to the viewer to bring a meaning to it. The thing about film is that the viewer is almost required to find analogies to their own existence, ideas, or beliefs in the film even if they weren't intended. Nearly all of the people on that show mentioned exact myths and legends that Lucas could have used without seemingly noting the fact that every culture creates myths to explain the world around them and, while these myths and legends tend to be region specific in their storylines, they all tend to fit into the exact same motifs.

To make a long story short, George Lucas didn't pick and choose the mythical and legendary archetypes that he filtered into the STAR WARS films. What he did do was take the basic belief and idea from all of these stories and used them to help form his own saga.
