ATTN Eternalvox.net hostees: Globat.com will be performing network maintenance during our maintenance window this weekend in the period from Thursday, May 18th 11:00pm (PST) to Friday, May 19th at 6:00am (PST). Although we do not expect your site to be down for the entire time, we want to make sure our technicians have enough time to correct any unexpected issues that may arise.

The e-mail goes on to say they are switching out some faulty power breakers.... great. At least there's some sort of warning this time.

Not that I wasn't already in love with Canada, but here's some additional glee, as reported at isoHunt:

As reported here and here, Canadian artists such as Barenaked Ladies, Avril Lavigne, Sarah McLachlan, Chantal Kreviazuk, Sum 41, Stars, Raine Maida (Our Lady Peace), Dave Bidini (Rheostatics), Billy Talent, John K. Samson (Weakerthans), Broken Social Scene, Sloan, Andrew Cash and Bob Wiseman, have formed a new Canadian Music Creators Coalition (CMCC). They are speaking out against the same entertainment industry associations such as the RIAA and CRIA, who claims to represent artist rights. Stop the piracy! Feed the artists! Apparently that's not the case according to the CRIA's own study. Talk about irony.

Definitely have a look at their statement, which points out that suing fans is destructive and digital locks are counterproductive.

Speaking of corporate greed....

Apple rival 'tries to ban iPods': Digital music player maker Creative Technology has asked a US court to ban Apple from selling or marketing its iconic iPods in the US.

Okay, that's just... dumb.

[livejournal.com profile] thebigfatman sent me a link to this story: A campground at Natural Bridges National Monument has been closed because of bubonic plague detected among field mice and chipmunks.

West Nile, bird flu, mad cow, and now bubonic plague returns. You think the Earth is trying to tell us something?

In non-depressing news, I am really digging the song "Munich" by The Editors. When I first heard the song, I actually thought it was a new ZOX song because of the instrumentation XD But the lead singer sounds a wee bit like the lead from Interpol... erm.. in that song at least. I haven't heard anything else by them except "Blood," but I think their CD is on sale at Best Buy. I might pick it up. They sound quite excellent live, too.

I finally got the envelopes addressed for my big SGA mailing, plus most of the customs forms (I'm four short...). I probably don't even need the customs forms as I don't think they'll weigh over 1lb, but who knows. Better to have them filled out before I get there. Just waiting on a couple last minute details and they'll be good to go.

It's also entirely possible that I'm thinking of making a mix for [livejournal.com profile] auburnnothenna's "In the City of Seven Walls." I blame this entirely on KCRW and their current rotation.

Can you do me a favor and delete all my files in eternalvox.net/~wu for me? I would do it myself, but the FTP I used was deleted so I don't have the information to log in anymore.

thanks!

Sure, no problem :) Did you want to keep the account still or should I just delete it?

that's so awesome!!! damnit leave it to canada to pave the way and speak truth to power! it's about time people questioned the law instead of stubbornly applying outdated copyright policies to our everchanging society :| i'm going to post this in my journal as well~!

Canadians are awesome. :)

The whole Sony rootkit thing was probably the final straw for a lot of people -- consumers and artists alike. I wanted to buy the Imogen Heap CD, but I saw that it had a big 'ol rootkit warning on the Amazon page and decided against it. See what you did, Sony?

Now that the trial is over, I'll be on the letters today. Though, really, you don't have to worry. I liked the one to David, which was the one I read before life started getting hectic.

Not at all suprised that Sarah is involved in this. Her lable is horrible. Every since Afterglow they make it impossible for you to actually copy or rip the cd you bought. I think more and more artist are getting the picture that the more of there music is out there the more money it is for them. Yes I might might download a new arist first album but if I like them chances are I will buy the next one. Wonder what Sarah's lable would say to knowing not only do I own all her albums (fan club ones aside) but I've replaced Mirrorball three times.

I think the fact that labels are the ones who make the most money from actual CD sales is not really helping to change their minds. I foresee more artists releasing CDs on their own as production becomes less expensive or even just selling digital files for practically no production cost.

I would be all over that. I wouldn't mind paying $5 for a whole CD if I new it was going to artist and the artist alone.
