Dear DVD-ROM,

I HATE YOU. Just read the frelling DVD. Why can you read regular CDs but not DVDs? It's not that you won't read them, you won't even recognize that there's a damn disk. If you make that FRELLING sound one more time, I'm going to yank you out of the bay and throw you out a window.

NO LOVE,

Me.

Edit: Basically my drive is frelled and i need to buy a new one. Suspected this a while ago but was too lazy and broke. I'm still on the verge of broke, but it's frustrating.

A lot of purchased and rented DVD's won't work in my DVD drive. It makes me very sad. :(

I think mine's been on the way out for.. oh.. the last two years. Sometimes it won't read a disc at first, but open and close the drive a few times and it'd be fine. Eh.. not anymore though.

Three things to check:
Are you certain that the DVD-ROM is for the correct region?
Do you have the latest drivers and firmware for the DVD-ROM?
Are you using the latest software for the DVD-ROM? (My thinkpad's DVD ultrabay device won't recognise DVD's unless there's a DVD playing software package installed. I'm assuming that the software has the necessary drivers for XP)

Well... first of all the drive is almost 5 years old. It used to play DVDs. S'how I made it throgh college, being all DVD player-less.

1) Region 1. Tried three different discs. Switched to a regular audio CD, which it registered, then back to the DVD, which it would attempt to read, but then wouldn't.

2) Drivers, yes. Firmware... uhm.. I don't even know what brand of drive it is.

3) Using WinDVD, but that doesn't really matter since the thing isn't even registering the DVD. Or, actually it is, but the busy light just stays lit.

I googled the issue and the most common answer is that the drive is dying - which I believe. I had to replace my burner a while back for similar reasons - wouldn't read, wouldn't burn. Just bought a new Artec DHM-G48 for $30. It's gotten good reviews. *shrug*

Thanks though :)

Ah, technology at its' finest. I had a similar problem for a long time with my Playstation 2's refusal to play PS 2 games and DVDs. Annoying. I feel the pain.
