scarf fun!
Feb. 25th, 2004 08:03 pmLike, omg, I finished knitting my scarf. Finally. Took me 3 weeks -_-;; It's about 3" wide and is super long. I like it ^_^ Going to possible work on a wrist band or another scarf next. Can't decide. Found a neat parrtern for a wrist band with a "geek" design, but I'm not sure I can figure out the interstarsia thing. Will try.

In related news: Rock on, Wil Wheaton!: And this brings me to the first thing that's so profoundly upsetting about this entire issue: it's not about marriage, it's not about love, it's not about family, it's not about commitment. It's about hating homosexuals. It's about treating homosexuals as if they are second-class citizens. It's about dividing this country into those who support discrimination, and those who don't. It's about Karl Rove updating The Southern Strategy.
Hm.. Smallville's on. Think I'll watch that before Angel. Haven't had dinner but can't really be bothered.

Date: 2004-02-25 07:48 pm (UTC)What I can't understand is, if people don't like the thought of gay marriage, then they shouldn't marry a gay and/or they shouldn't think about it. It is not anyone's business but gay people.
Keep government out of our bedrooms.
And by the way,

Date: 2004-02-26 07:17 am (UTC)I think the problem is that the majority of this country is Christian.. and most of those Christians are crazed and are trying to impose their beliefs on everyone else - the major one being that homosexuality is a sin and that if homosexuals are allowed to be "married," which is a "sacred union," then that would be tainting their belief system.
Feh.

Date: 2004-02-26 08:31 am (UTC)We used to live in the Chicago area when I was growing up. When we moved here, in the late 60s, it was lily white, and in the town of Sauk Rapids, Minnesota, the Catholics and Lutherans barely spoke.
I don't think Christianity in itself is so bad. I consider myself to be agnostic, but if the Christians would just listen to the words of Christ in the Bible, something like "Do unto others as you would have others do unto you," and "Love they neighbor as thyself," that's all anyone ever needs. It is the Ten Commandments condensed into two.
Sadly, the very vocal Christian Right seems to "Do unto others like me. . ." and "love my neighbor who thinks, looks and acts like me."
Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely (here (http://phrases.shu.ac.uk/meanings/22900.html) is a more accurate quote). Truly religious people can be very good people, but organized religion preys on our strongest instincts and fears (sex and death) and tells us if we don't believe a certain way, and act a certain way, we will burn in hell forever.
I don't think Christ ever said that. And I don't think Christ would approve of hating or ostracizing a whole group of people based on their sexual orientation.

Date: 2004-02-26 08:43 am (UTC)I'm not very religious, certainly not Christian - my family is Buddhist and I have pagan tendencies. I also attended Roman Catholic schools for 11 years, so I know the ins and outs pretty well.
I agree with you about Jesus not approving of the hate mongering that's going on today. That's definitely not the message he was spreading and his main goal was to take religion away from the temples and the figureheads and bring it back to the people - less ritual, more love.
If the Christians crying foul would just take a step back and see what they're doing -- how far away they are from Jesus' message -- maybe they'd just shut up and let people be. Instead they wave the Bible around and persecute those who the Bible says are sinners. The only people being hurt in this situation are the gay couples and their families who are constantly being attacked for trying to just live their lives.

Date: 2004-02-26 08:49 am (UTC)They quote lots of Old Testament scripture and less New Testament scripture, which I find interesting since, from what I learned, Jesus came to establish a different kind of church. And they quote lots from Paul and few of the words of Christ himself, like the ones I mentioned, and the Beatitudes, etc.

Date: 2004-02-26 09:06 am (UTC)The Bible had tons of different authors who would obviously write a biased story. Genesis alone had 5 (I think..) different authors and they were all just smooshed together. It's very convenient for the religious extremists to pick out the quotes that they want. It's a sick little word game.
For instance I can quote Bush as saying: "You know, we want to harm America." He said that during Meet the Press. However, his response was actually something like, "[terrorists think], you know, 'we want to harm America.'"
So, if they quoted Jesus (even then the events were written many years after his death), they wouldn't have as much ground to stand on. Old Testament God was very much fire and wrath, which is the kind of ammunition they want. New Testament God became more benevolent and was seen as "the Holy Father".
This journal entry is fairly interesting and digs deeper into the historical meanings of the Old Testament and things set forth such as not marrying an "outsider." Very well researched. She also posted an entry about Biblical slavery vs. African slavery.

I will look at that Journal entry and get back to you.
And I will have one of my daughters show me (again) (I never remember) how to friend you.
