Helsing Ad Under Fire

What do Universal and Janet Jackson have in common? They're both taking heat for showing too much during the Super Bowl. The studio has actually heard complaints about the graphic nature of the 60-second advertisement run for the upcoming Van Helsing, starring Hugh Jackman and Kate Beckinsale.

That's just really, really ridiculous. First of all, fantasy violence. Second of all, I think you should worry more about all those half-naked models playing contact football and gratuitous beer commercials. Third of all, SHUTTHEFUCKUP!

Having said that, I'm glad Universal isn't backing down:

Writer/director Stephen Sommers has established himself as a filmmaker who creates entertainment enjoyed by audiences of all ages. The tone and content of Van Helsing have been designed to continue that tradition and fit well within the Motion Picture Association of America parameters established for a PG-13 rating. The 60-second advertisement for the film that ran during the Super Bowl was approved by the MPAA.

While the spot contained images of fanged fantasy creatures, it did not feature any blood or gore, nor any depiction of realistic graphic violence.

I read this too fast and thought they were upset that Hugh, like Janet, showed sexy, offensive chest-age.

Do they specify whether the complaints were because the effects were too graphic-looking or too cheesy-looking? 'Cause if it's the latter, I might have to agree...

I believe the arguement was that the 30 second trailer was too graphic and inapproriate for "family viewing."

Let me get this straight there is no blood or gore or graphic violence in the trailer and yet they are still having a cow. About what their children seeing Vampire's and other monsters. Please And ITA agree with you about the beer ads.

Yep, that is exactly what happened. I still don't know how/why all these people are saying "OH, the Super Bowl is family viewing!"

I'd sooner let my kids watch Van Helsing than the Super Bowl :-P

ITA People have a very werid sense of what's okay to show there kids and what's not. I'm not saying the game is bad but the ads aren't fit for children.

Well, yeah, the game itself is pretty blah. It's more the ads in-between and the nearly naked cheerleaders and the Lingerie Bowl, which I guess is family programing :-P
