underworld, re2
Sep. 21st, 2003 08:13 pmWheee! I saw it ^___^ (hence the tweaked lycan icon) And yeah.. it was riddled with plot holes, but... reading the novelization helped a lot. So I suggest people read it after they see the movie. Seriously, the only way I knew most of the backstory and could follow the super-speedy plot pace was because I had read the thing. Characters have more depth in the novelization as well. For instance, Erika is much more interesting and you have a better sense of her motivations and logic.
There will be a sequel. There must be. I demand one. The Selene/Michael dynamic wasn't really explored, but the film was packed with so many characters, it didn't really give the audiance time to like really. Selene, Lucian, and Michael all had much more potential. I admit, the film could have been so much more. I'm hoping for a director's cut or a nice 2-disc set.
Vampires. Kind of cool... but I thought they would have more, you know, powers. Even super-speed would have been nice, but it didn't seem like Selene - a death dealer - could move any faster than a normal human. The only one with cool powers was Viktor.
Lycans. Very nice. The best movie werewolves to date, I dare say. The morphing was fantastic, as was the anatomy with the elongated snouts and the way the legs and arms changed to a more lupine configuration. So fantastic. They were cooler than the vampires, really.
Selene. Totally kicked ass. Leather, guns, nice car, snarky attitude. My kind of girl. I wish there were more scenes with her doing the Death Dealer thing, but whatever.
Michael. Meh. He was really only interesting when he turned into the hybrid and was kicking Viktor's ass. Well, okay, getting his ass kicked by Viktor. But still - very cool, very feral, and strangely, very Nightcrawler. If that's what Kurt Wager looked like in "X2" (instead of the... whatever that was), I think I would have been happier. Then again, I have issues with the outfit they stuck Kurt in. Um, anyway, yes. Hybrid!Michael = totally worth the ticket price.
Kraven. What an asshat. Shane Brolly, dude, what was up with the accent? You had a nice European thing going for a while and then at the end of the film, you were slipping back to your Irish on a couple of words. Must have filmed those scenes early in production before the dialect coach got you reigned in.
Lucian. Once you know his backstory, he's that much more sympathetic and you feel kind of bad when he dies. I would have enjoyed a full playback of what happened with Sonja (Sonya?) 'cause that would have been interesting. That's just me though. Anyway... Lucian was cool. But insane. Slightly.
Viktor. He was an annoying bastard. Who talked really funny. People in the theatre were giggling.
Kahn was highly amusing... because I remember Robbie Gee from "Snatch." Seriously. If you saw "Snatch" and remember the character he played... it's amusing. Kahn also made some really cool weapons, but I wish he know how to use that light thingy on his gun so he possibly wouldn't have been killed. Because that was sad.
Plot holes, but good. I look forward to another film.
Oh, right and trailers before the film: "Kill Bill" and "Resident Evil: Apocalypse." Dude. Resident Evil 2. The trailer itself is an advert for a fictional product called Regenerate with a few clips from the first movie tossed in at the end. The synopsis gives away a fair bit of the plot, but sounds a lot like a game's mission brief. Milla is back as Alice and is joined by Sienna Guillory who's playing Jill Valentine. Sound pretty good.
edited to add stuff I forgot.

Date: 2003-09-22 03:14 am (UTC)LOVED it. Must go see it again.
I agree with the plot holes. I wasn't confused, though when I'm watching a movie.. I have blinders on :-p
I was surprised how little Michael was used in the movie. I mean, he was stuck in scenes, but did we ever really know much about him? Nooo.
I felt over-all that I walked into the movie during the middle of it.. even though I know I didn't.. it just felt that way :-(
But yes.. there must be a sequel.
*cries* I didn't have a 'Kill Bill' trailer on mine! Only RE2. Grr argh.

Date: 2003-09-22 06:12 am (UTC)Booo! No "Kill Bill" trailers means your theater probably won't be showing "Kill Bill" :(

Date: 2003-09-22 02:08 pm (UTC)Well lets hope that we'll get a whole glob of deleted scenes in the dvd!
But Kate Beckinsale was so worth the four bucks I paid to see it. :-D
Well they have 'Kill Bill' posters in the theatre.. but they didn't show the trailer. Grr.
