Do we really need power? Um.. yeah...
Aug. 15th, 2003 12:40 amRight. So we lost power for about 4 hours here. Didn't think much of it until
ozw called me and told me that NYC was out. Then mom was listening to the radio and found out most of the Northeast had no power. 'Twas at first suspected to be a terrorist attack (meh..), but was later revealed that lightening struck a plant in Canada. When we got power back, we watched the new a bit and they said that NYC was probably going to be the last place to get restored XD That sucks...
[edit: not thinking clearly... but I meant that they suspected it was lightening that hit the plant. ]
Something that Bloomberg said didn't really make sense... that the ConEd power plant can only put out as much electricity as it's getting from an outside source, which is why it had to be shut down once the Canadian plant went down. That doesn't compute somehow.
It's funny how people don't realize how much they depend on electricity until it's gone. In more rural areas, it's not a huge deal; we're not gonna die without power for several hours. But in place like NYC, it's nearly chaos. I hear everyone was very calm and orderly, though. Yay, New York.
I tried to call
ozw back, but the call wouldn't go through. Dropped 2 txt messages, but don't know if those got through either. Also called
bluewraith to see if CT had power (he did, but Hartford didn't). It was good talking to him again, since I hadn't in the longest time. He's still working at Ritz, but has a new place with his girlfriend. I miss chatting with him about stupid geeky things ^_^*
So.. without power I was actually mildly productive. I read two Alias prequels: A Secret Life and The Pursuit (a Vaughn novel). I liked the first better and am sort of ashamed to admit that the novels are making me likeNo-Augh Noah. But only a little. The Vaughn prequel was a little less interesting and the French is not nearly as amusing when I have to read it and try to sound it out. No, I'd much rather have Vartan speaking the lines :-P I'm missing # 3: Disappeared and I want to read that before I read #4, so I'll probably order that at work tomorrow.
Speaking of, I believe it's time for bed.

Date: 2003-08-15 08:46 pm (UTC)We got REALLY dicked in southern Westchester, no power for almost an entire 24 hours. But it's all good, we found ways to entertain ourselves.
However, as you said, it is truly amazing how much we rely on electricity and how much of an inconvenience it becomes when it disappears.
