[livejournal.com profile] fyrdrakken pointed out that LJ will allow paid users to buy more icon slots. Paid accounts can buy up to 20 slots. Permanent users will be automatically upgraded to 20 slots. Wheeee!

explanation here - though I still don't know how it works..

Eh.. this isn't really accurate for me as I don't know #1, #3 is a friend of soemone I no longer talk to, #4 is a dummy journal I created, and a few are communities filled with people I likely couldn't trust. Bah.

Right. Going to get dressed and ready to go out and stuff.

I don't think it's closest non-friends so much as non-friends culled from your friends' friends who seem trustworthy based on a confusing algorithm. And the algorithm needs work -- it would help if users were allowed to get in and make a "personal" version where they rated their own "trusted" friends and the algorithm went to work on that. Because in the list that I got there are at least two users I wouldn't come near with a ten-foot halberd -- but on the other hand, one of my longest-held friends says that her entire friends list made it to my list of 50 there. (For what it's worth, like the guy who made the function noted, you'll probably recognize names in the list that you don't have friended for good reason -- and there are a few on there that I used to have friended. The one I snipped is my ficblog, too, which I won't refer to by name in my own LJ.)

*nods* I thought maybe there was some sort of way to rate the trustworthiness of a user, but I can't seem to find that function. Even if it were available, imagine the abuse factor...

On one of the pages that was discussing the whole thing and how it worked, there was mention that the trust rating business would have to be anonymous, to keep people from adding asshats solely because said asshats on their friends list kept nagging to be listed as "trusted." That being said, I suspect they set it up with a few people being marked as "trusted" and all else follows from who happens to be connected to those via LJ, and then who they connected to, etc.

For what it's worth, two highly untrustworthy people that I know of were pulled up on my top 50 list.
