Propaganda on TV
Dec. 19th, 2002 11:28 amLast night I was flipping through the channels and happened to land on ABC Family - the 700 Club was on. I know this show has always been heavy on the Christian propaganda, but lately it's gotten pretty thick. The hosts were answering questions from viewers, the first being about Christmas and how they heard that it was a pagan holiday. Well, of course not, the host says, no one knows when Jesus' real birthday was, so a Pope arbitrarily picked December 25th as Christmas. Um, that's not what I've heard and if someone can really correct me, that's be great, but I've always thought (and been told) that the reason December was picked for Christmas was the symbolism of Winter Solstice (which is a pagan holiday) - the longest night of the year gives way to increasing hours of day light, ie: Jesus' birth brings light to the world. Well, that one was a moot point, but this next one.. oh boy...
A view writes in asking if it's okay, as a Christian to be learning martial arts - "warfare and self-defense." Okay, I don't know who calls it "warfare," but whatever. The host answers that yes, self-defense is okay because in the Bible, Jesus tells his followers to bring swords with them - and if it's okay in the Bible, it must be okay in life. Riiiight. Fine, I can live with that, but this next part pisses the hell out of me: the host goes on to say that some martial arts have aspects of occultism (read occultism) because they are based in Asian religions and part of the art are teahing in Buddism, etc that are not okay for a Christian to be learning or teaching. What the hell?! They let this crap on tv? This is basically teaching intolerance. So what if a Christian learns a martial art based in Asian religion? Aren't 99% of them based in Asian religion anyway?) It's not like that's going to corrupt them or anything. Creepy psycho-Christians.
And lastly, before I changed the channel, they had a review on Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (during which the host says "Twin Towers") promoting as a "Christian film," because apparently (and I've never hread this before, ever) JRR Tolkien converted CS Lewis to Christianity. Ummm.. riiiiight. During the course of this interview, the reviewer proceeded to compare Gandalf the White to Jesus, Sauron to the Devil, and I tuned out on most of it, save for the fact that almost every actor and character's name was pronounced wrong (it's tol-KEEN, you idiot, not TOL-ken).
ARGH. How do brainwashing shows like this stay on air?
