Fandom influences
Nov. 4th, 2002 03:10 pmGot half an hour left at work... with little to do before I rush back to my room to work on the armature for my clay sculpture before *gag* Law class.
Been thinking lately about my personality and style, having realized that even though I'm an individual, a lot of who I am comes from fandom - outwardly anyway. Let's go over some of my obsessed ways, shall we? If you answer no, please, feel free to skip the rest. Or leave me a message calling me a freak.
Hair: Since high school, I've always brought a picture of an anime character or an actress to my hair dresser to copy. Got streaks done one year because Rinoa (FFVIII) had them. Had my hair cut like Sailor Mercury's (looked meh...) and Sailor Uranus' (not one of my better ideas). Latest cut is very similar to Willow's from season 5/early-6. Have been wanting to dye my hair blue since I was Sailor Moon fan, and now even more 'cause of Alias (I dunno...) For a while, I was braiding my hair in little braids almost exactly like Legolas from "Fellowship of the Ring." Discovered that took way too much time and stopped.
Makeup: Started wearing dark makeup partially because of Faith. Painted nails deep reds and black, sometimes tipped in white. Developed this weird nail polish distressing technique to look like the black polish Spike would sport. I was always into mhendi, but started buying kits once I saw it on Xena. Recently started wearing eyeliner 'cause it looked so cute on Ewan, I had to give it a try. Still looks better on Ewan.
Clothing: Started wearing certain things I saw on Buffy back in season 2-4. I had Willow's overall outfit (this red/orange deal with the striped shirt) and bought Converse sneakers to match. Put together an outfit similar to the one Buffy had in "Primeval" (black tank, white sheer, [p]leather pants). Bought things that I would never normally be caught dead in, but had to have because I saw it on my favorite show. Really go into pleather and tight tanks because of Faith. Cloaks and other Ren wear from various things, but especially Lord of the Rings. For Halloween I pieced together Sydney's outfit from "Almost Thirty Years" (Alias) and discovered I really liked the punk/goth/bondage look. Must be the vinyl. Oy, and now the big one: Gloves. Never even thought about it until I saw "X-Men." Once I was in the fandom, forget it. I think I have over 20 pairs of gloves and wear them almost everyday. The scarf thing passed quickly. Am still looking for the "Matrix" coat Neo wore, Spike leather duster, and Virginia's (10th Kingdom) duster. For the Farscape Brooklyn Con, I'm getting Aeryn's duster made, as well as Alice's red dress ("Resident Evil). Planning to wear both on a semi-regular basis.
Jewelry: Another downfall. First fandom influenced piece was a Claddagh ring. Buffy fandom, of course. I didn't like the plain ones, so I got one studded in hemetite. Been wearing it for 6 years or so. Had a bunch of silver crosses, but I stopped wearing them because people kept confusing me for a deeply religious person instead of a fandom freak. New Zealand bone carving - because I was looking for a greenstone carving similar to the one Iolaus wore (Hercules) and liked that better instead. Commissioned a bangle modeled after the Witchblade, but the girl never contacted me back. Bought a silver wrist cuff from an art fair instead... cheap substitute. Oh, had been wearing Canadian dog tags ("X-Men") for several months before I gave my grandfather the ball-chain thing because he needed it more than me. I had "Wolverine" and his numbers engraved on it.
Other Things: Took Tae Kwon Do for three months because I heard Sarah Michelle Gellar was a brown belt. Always slanted towards Wiccan/paganism, but Willow in Buffy pushed that along a bit. Also developed an affinity for techno-pagan type things because of Jenny Calendar. Tried to take up Japanese because I watched way to much anime in high school. Also tried my hand at Latin because I loved mythology and because of the Greek/Latin fun in Xena.
I'm sure there are a bunch more, so I may add to this ramble later. For now, it's time to go get some food from the meal hall and watch "High Fidelity" while I attempt to do some sculpture work. w00t!

Date: 2002-11-04 01:33 pm (UTC)I had, still have the same problem. You should do like me.
When someone ask you if you're wearing crosses to show your love for God, look at them like they're dumb and say "I'm wearing it as protection against vampires!". And then go on about Buffy. ;)
