One thing still bugging me about the show: casual usage of Mandarin as slang. Their pronunciation makes the language nearly unrecognizable and I have no idea why they're using it anyway. Can anyone please explain it to me?

Ooo, ooo, I know this one, and I haven't even seen the show! Just read an article on it, though, and apparantly the big political power is formed of a global alliance between America and China. And it also sounded like Mandarin was the language used for "official" / govt business. Heh, kinda like French was in England after the Norman invasion, maybe. So I guess the idea is that people are taught, or at least pick up some of, both languages. No clue if the crappy pronounciation is sposed to be on purpose or not, though.
