Just wanted to let everyone know....

Due to an increased rate of submissions, Symantec Security Response is upgrading the threat level for W32.Klez.E@mm from level 2 to level 3 as of March 6, 2002.

W32.Klez.E@mm is similar to W32.Klez.A@mm. It is a mass-mailing email worm that also attempts to copy itself to network shares. The worm uses random subject lines, message bodies, and attachment file names.

The worm exploits a vulnerability in Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express in an attempt to execute itself when you open or even preview the message in which it is contained. Information and a patch for the vulnerability are available at http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS01-020.asp.

The worm overwrites files and creates hidden copies of the originals. In addition, the worm drops the virus W32.Elkern.3587, which is similar to W32.ElKern.3326.

The worm attempts to disable some common antivirus products and has a payload which fills files with all zeroes.

Damage:

Payload: Disables common antivirus products
Large scale e-mailing: Mails email adddresses found in local files, and Outlook and ICQ address books
Modifies files: Overwrites files with zeros on the 6th of every odd numbered month (January, March, May, July, September, November)

This technophobe side of me would like to ask a question...

Should I still get the MS patch even though I'm running IE 6 and not 5.0 or 5.5?

Thank you Ms Help Desk. ;)

Eh... the patch mentioned here is for Outlook/Outlook Express, which you should probably get if you use those programs.

Unless you are talking about another patch...

Yup, I know it's talking about OE, but when I 'upgraded' OE to v.6, I actually had to do it through IE. There isn't any OE 6... it's a part of the IE 6 package.

And I went to the link, and I think it was talking about IE... but I can't remember. That was this morning and I can't remember this morning.... waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyy too long a day... >_

Aw.. *HUGS* I am not sure about OE6. I didn't even know there was OE6... We've stopped supporting OE6 because we switched over to some Exchange mail thingy and can only use Outlook XP.

Huh. Outlook XP, huh? Guess that'd be one of those nifty programs I'd find out about if I sucked up my courage and actually UPGRADED to XP, hey? hehehe I mean, I'm using ME at the moment... but I *have* the XP disc... and DUDE just had THE weirdest flash of dejavu. I've told you all this before, haven't I?

*bangs head on desk*

Uh.... XP? Dude.. I'm still using 98.

Nope, you haven't told me about that before. ME sucks. :-P Bck up your documents and upgrade to XP ^_^ It's much more reliable. Eh... relatively speaking. ^_~

LOL You mean, as reliable as Windows can be, huh? *snicker*

I haven't had THAT much problem with ME *knocks frantically on wood* I mean, sometimes it happens that I can't click on anything on the desktop, or some stuff will freeze, but my laptop (98) used to do the same thing... usually rights itself after a restart. *shrug* and do you KNOW how long it would take me to back everything up?! o_O eep!

2000 and XP are supposed to be relatively "crash-proof." Programs and stuff will crash, of course, but the OS pretty much keeps chugging along. I know people who haven't restarted their 2000 machine in WEEKS.

*jaw drops* Weeks?! Aren't they supposed to, like... shut down the computers every once in a while?! o_O

Um.. nah. LOL. My machine is on 24/7 and I think runs a bit better. My old machine acted all funny if you turned it on and off all the time. When I left it on, it worked.. better.

But... the fans and stuff! I remember reading somewhere (possibly by one of the guys on SlipStream, who was a computer tech person) that you're supposed to give the computers a break every now and then so that the internal parts don't wear out as fast. *shrug*

Not that I doubt you.... just, weird 'tis all. My computer sometimes wigs a bit if it's been on for a while... like 1 or 2 nights in a row. LOL

Maybe. But all our techs have told me to just leave it on. Something about it being easier for the hard drive to keep spinning rather then to start and stop. Our servers have been running non-stop for a couple years and my old computer at home is 6 years old and is still running. I think it's on 24/7 still.. heh.

Mmkay, I'm going with what you and your techs are saying as opposed to one person who I don't know on a board I never visit anymore. :D
