covenant vs volcano high

When I saw the trailer for The Covenant, I thought it would be pretty entertaining, and it is. Except I got to the final fight sequence I realized it was very likely a shoddy excuse for them to make a movie just so they could use Volcano High-like effects. No, really.
Ignoring the crap music laid in by a fan, this is the final fight in the Covenant. Compare with this scene from Volcano High. There is also a scene with one of the teachers using the high energy strings.
