I'm not cutting.. because I don't feel like it. No spoilers because I haven't seen it. Although... how do you spoil a plot that's been around for over a thousand years? Moving on...
So all this drama over
The Passion. Meh. It's a movie. Yeah, I know it's about a very heavy religious topic, and it's super bloody, and some Jews think the movie was made to destroy them!!!11!! Liekomg. And Christians are all "If you love Jesus, you will
make Mel Gibson more money go see it!" See it, don't see it. I don't friggin care. Don't go and bitch about how intense it was and how it's inappropriate because your Bible has white-washed everything. Hello, people, use some logic. It's a Mel Gibson film (Braveheart, anyone?), it's about the death of Jesus at the hands of the Romans, and it's been marketed as a realistic, violent, bloody film. The Romans weren't exactly a friendly bunch, especially if they were going to
put you to death. Crucifixion wasn't a special thing they developed for the Son of God, you know - it was a pretty normal event. Like hangings.
[Edit: I just wanted to make a correction to the statement I made above about the white-washing of the Bible. The Bible itself
is filled with many violent stories. I should have specified that I meant the crucification of Jesus.
From a reply I left below: Jesus' torment is described very briefly (
Matthew 27:26-44;
Mark 15:17-37;
Luke 23:26-43;
John 19:17-27) and in rather vague detail (IMO). Obviously, I don't know if they were purposely edited or if the original writers wanted to spare their readers the graphic nature of the subject. Then again, it's possible that they didn't need to describe it as crucifixions were a common enough spectacle that people knew what happened. In any case, I apologize for my blanket statement.
/edit]People are coming out of the theaters shaken and disturbed. Good. I mean, don't go on a violent killing spree or anything, but good! Maybe it will make you think, make you question. Maybe you'll really think about Jesus' message and not the garbage that the Church wants you spreading around to "save the heathens!" Jesus was all for the love, acceptance, and forgiveness - not religious brainwashing. Afterall, he and his apostles were a rogue religious faction - the Hebrews didn't like Jesus and his followers because...
they had different religious beliefs. Liekomg!! They questioned the religious leaders of the time. How dare they!
I heard on the news this morning that a woman collapsed towards the end of the movie and later died in the hospital. If she died of a heartattack, do you think they'll pull the film or rate it an NC-17? I mean, "Young Adam"'s getting an NC-17 and that was just for flashing Ewan's penis for however many seconds. You would think brutal, bloody, realistic torture and execution would rate higher than an R, but what do I know?
Having babbled all of that, I haven't seen the film yet. I probably will, but I don't know if my mother will want to go. My father.... hey, I would take him
if he'd have a heartattack at the end too.. oh that was mean but he'd either be really confused, fall asleep, miss the point entirely, or worse, become a raging born-again. Maybe I'll go with my brother while my mom's in Arizona. Why am I going? Certainly not because I'm supporting psycho-Christians or Mel Gibson or because I hate Jews. I'm going because it looks like an interesting, bloody, violent movie... and it's in a foreign language. I'm easy, really.
