costume: hawkeye done!

I finished my Avengers Movie Hawkeye costume! \o/ Just took some photos. They're kind of ugly since it's cloudy here and I used a flash because I just couldn't wait to get some photos!

I ended up hand sewing the vest because I don't trust my machine, so I spent two hours yesterday pinning the hell out of it and then it took me 7 hours to sew it all. I also had to take in the sides of the vest a bit so I actually look like I have a waist. I think it came out pretty well, though. The thing that bugs me now, of course, is that the vest is a faded black. For DragonCon, I might tape off the panels and get some spray dye to darken it up.

The TUK Gladiator boots are from my River costume which I haven't worn in ages, so it's good to have a use for them. The glasses are Fit Overs so that I can actually still see. They look pretty great with front lighting/flash, but when I'm back lit, you can totally see my regular glasses under them. Oh well. I could also make some leg straps to make the bottom half a little more interesting. For now, I think I've got enough work into it though.

So, the above photos are all with me wearing compression pants, but I also tried the costume with slim black jeans and I think that works okay. I'm not sure which I like better - it will probably depend on how I'm feeling on whatever day I'm wearing this costume.

This looks frickin SWEET! Seriously, it turned out really fantastic.

Looking at the photos, I don't see a distinct enough difference to say I like the compression pants or the jeans better - the jeans are form fitting enough to not look out of place. How well do the compression pants breathe? That would be my deciding factor depending on where the costume was being worn.

(You should totally bring this to D*Con.)

I am totally bringing this to DCon! I'll test run the compression pants at Albany ComicCon this weekend and see how comfortable I am running around in what are basically thick tights. :\

Thanks! :D The dilemma now is compression pants or jeans. In daylight, the jeans are too dark for the vest, but with flash, the compression pants are slightly too shiny. Ugh.

First thought: I'm betting the jeans have pockets and the compression pants don't, which is a factor unless you plan on carrying a bag around or the vest has pockets or something. Second thought is that the compression pants are noticeably sleeker -- a bit spandexy -- more like what a comic-book heroine would be wearing than what a (male) secret agent would be in, so how far are you intending to genderbend this costume? (I didn't pay that much attention to how tight Hawkeye's pants were in the movie, so I don't know if the jeans would be more movie-accurate or not.)

Third thought, given you're talking about daylight vs. flash, is to wear the compression pants during the day and the jeans at night.

Hm.. all very good points.

In the movie, Hawkeye is wearing.. well, they're not BDUs, but they look like that sort of material. No spandex for him.

I'm kind of leaning away from the compression pants unless I get some thigh straps or something to make it look a little more interesting.
