flistomg; us vs china; jf q&a; sga dvd
Nov. 16th, 2005 01:50 am... skip=390. And I'm not sure I read everything I was supposed to. Sorry :-\
cassiejamie linked me to this article: Bush: China shouldn't fear freedom .... The man is in Japan talking about China and then in a future speech he will be citing Taiwan as an example of democracy. Are you seriously damaged? If he thinks this will make China more agreeable, he's got another thing coming.
In the same article, Japan's ban on US beef is discussed. Uhm. Look, if Japan wants to ban our tainted, hormone-injected beef, that should totally be up to them. Hell, I'm pretty sure I shouldn't be eating our poisoned cow either. It's ridiculous that that's some sort of trade issue.
In more entertaining news, Gateworld posted a bit of Q&A with Joe Flanigan in celebration of the DVD release. Of particular amusement:
How do you feel about Sheppard/McKay slashing (romantic relationship)?
"Thankfully I don't think about it that much. And if I slashed, I'm not sure David [Hewlett] would be my choice there. And I think he's kind of busy with the Paul McGillion slashing. You know how that works. I had no idea what slashing was. See? I've learned something."
Frankly, I can't believe that they asked him that, as I'm having scary LoTR fan flashbacks, but I'm amused with his answer.
What's the strangest thing a fan has ever given you?
"I would say almost all of the fans have been really sincere, good-hearted, and normal. I think I've had a few freaky episodes but having said that I have a little bit of a filter. I have an assistant who has kept me from certain fan mail because she said that it's a little bizarre, and I probably don't want to see it. The fan mail is what she really helps me with.
"We keep files and we try to remember everybody from different countries and all that sort of stuff. We try to really keep tabs on those things. There have been a number of times where she's just said, 'No no no, I'm not going to show you these things.' So I'm guessing that I've had a few bizarre things but I haven't seen them."
And it's a little bit sad that I'm wondering if mine was classified as bizarre. Because I'm paranoid like that.
On that note, it's time for bed so I can actually get up in the morning and go get that DVD set. Dammit.
Edit: Reading some reviews on Amazon, I came across one saying that disk 5 of the SGA season 1 set is defective -- that it has the same content as disk 1. Anyone who has this set -- can you confirm or deny?

Date: 2005-11-16 07:24 am (UTC)Yes, he answered, and he did so with a sense of humour, but come ON! You don't ASK an actor stuff like that. It's just as rude as showing the LOTR actors back then manipulated pictures of Merry and Pippin, or Frodo and Sam having sex. I'm sorry, but there's a line you don't cross as a fan, and asking questions like that when the actor has given no indication that he's interested in this kind of relationship between his character and another or even aware of it being an item in fandom IS crossing it. Because ultimately, as you can see from his answer, he doesn't distinguish between the characters being slashed and the actors. There's the crux. Privacy.
Also, your picture? Was in no way labelled bizarre. Because this is the kind of thing that actors will want to receive, it was smart and a beautiful piece of art. Bizarre would be underwear or nude pictures with marriage proposals. Yours was art. I bet the assistant gave it to him just to show him how different fans can be.

Date: 2005-11-16 07:43 am (UTC)I'm also getting sick of people constantly asking about "What's up with his hair?" I hope they didn't ask him that question in the rest of the interview. :P

Date: 2005-11-16 07:55 am (UTC)And just to clarify, I'd be having the wsame reaction if this was a purely fanon-based het relationship.
Fandom and real life should be kept separate.
And, of yes. That hair question. Silly, silly, silly. And not creative at all.
For heaven's sake, it's pretty, let's just leave it at that, hm? :o)

Date: 2005-11-16 03:28 pm (UTC)Gah! Me neither. Why would they do that?
Also, points off Joe Flanigan for not having the good taste to realize how much DH rules. Hee.
