So... Orlando's got some sort of bizarre American accent going on. I don't like and he sounds really wanky. Make it go away!

I called Cambridge Technical Institute again and got some details on the job they're advertising. Part-time, 10-15 hours/wk, possibly $500 a week. Work from home on a Windows machine with internet and at least be able to type 10-20 words/min. I'd b inputting medical claims data. It sounds great... except they want me to pay $250 for some training shit. Uh.. wtf? I've never had to PAY to get a job and I'm pretty sure I'm not going to start now. What sort of online training am I going to get for $250 anyway? Does this seem like a scam to anyone? If you've heard of this sort of thing and think it's legit, please let me know. I don't have the money, but if it's legit, maybe I'll give it a try.

I called Debbie about the jewelry set she wanted and she won't have the money for another two weeks. >_< Ugh.

Hungry. Going to go make food and be a lump for a little while.

I've never heard of anything like it and it sounds like a scam. Do they reimburse you for the $250? If they do, maybe it's legit. I dunno, sounds sort of "off" to me.

Nope. The guy said "most people just charge it on a credit card and pay it back when they get paid."

He was really eager for me to charge it right away on a credit card...

Well that, to me, is big red flag. Just say "no."

Um, most companies pay YOU for your time when they train you, not the other way around. Even if it's not a scam, and it sounds like it, I'm not exactly sure it'd be worth shelling out that kind of money for training that you may not even need in the future.

That's exactly what I'm thinking. My mom said it's likely that they're just trying to sell the software.

And I just remembered that the guy said "after training, we will place you with a medical clinic." So.. hrm...

Scam. No legit company would have you pay for training. They train you for free, or most places actually pay you for time during training. Not to mention, typing 20 wpm does not get you $500/week at any job.

Yeah, exactly. When he asked if I could meet a 10-20wpm speed, I was all "uhm.. I type about 55...?"

orlando, orlando, orlando.

*shakes head* I think it may be the resurgent Orli love talking, but he may be again, one of the few people that will make me willingly go see a movie costarring Kirsten Dunst.

See, I like Paul bettany, but I don't covet his ass.

;)

And the accent..he actually sounds like a lot of valley surfer boys here. It's amusing. He's david anders!

and word on the SCAM job.

Late on this, but yeah, when I was unemployed last year I ran across an ad for these people and called it because I recalled a coworker talking about having been a medical transcriptionist and how much she was able to make. When they mentioned that I'd need to pay a few hundred to start I figured A) I didn't have that money available anyway (same reason I didn't go for a bartending training course), and B) I saw no guarantee I'd be able to actually find work if I risked the money. (Never did ask Donita how she'd gotten the transcription job, and since neither of us worked at the lab any more I couldn't exactly get hold of her to ask.)
