Tom McRae @ Living Room 2/8/05
February 8, 2005 - The Living Room
11:26am
Waiting... waiting... waiting. Got to the train station an hour early. Didn't get lost! Yay! The train is 10 minutes late anyway. Crap. Was nervous this morning about driving to the train station and I felt all blah. Am better now. Had to park in the far lot since the garage and Lot A were full. Boo. At least parking is only $3 per day. Realized I forgot a Sharpie. If Joanne (
trippininabox) doesn't have one, I'll have to find some place to get them in the city. There are a gaggle of Chinese business people sitting here with me talking about translations.
Oh. The board just changed. My train's on time now. Rock.
3:10pm
Uhm. Okay. So the train's not on time. It is, in fact, nearly an hour late. Today's theme is waiting.
Met up with Joanne and went to find a bathroom. Proceeded to wait 10 minutes in line. Next, we went to buy an LIRR ticket to Garden City. Apparently the machines weren't processing credit card or debit card payment, but they couldn't be bothered to post any signage. We tried three machines before we gave up and used cash. Got myself a Metro Card and we were finally on our way.
We decided to go down to Canal St. and work our way to Ludlow, where the Living Room is. Except we were confused because the N train had both an N and a Q on it. Not that it really matters since they both stop on Canal, but really, it threw us off. So, we waited for the next one. *shrug* Once we got to Canal, we pretty much breezed through it. Didn't really realize it until we'd gotten to Ludlow and realized we still had an hour or so to kill. While on Canal, Joanne noticed the trucks lining the street were production vans and pointed out the sign reserving the parking... for Law & Order: SVU. I took pictures. Unfortunately, they were shooting the next day at 6am and fuck me if I'd be there that early.
5:00pm-ish
We've been waiting outside the Living Room for a while. Because we were under the impression that for will call you need to be there an hour before door. Which is actually what it said on Joanne's print out. Yeah, not so much. Made a phone post.
Some time between then and 6:00pm, Tom and Oli came in for soundcheck. Said a quick hello and I think I remember Tom saying that he wasn't sure what time they were on and something about us waiting outside. *shrug* I mean, not that we have to wait outside, just a comment about the waiting.
6:03pm
Phone post.
7:00pm
Opening act Jill Stevenson is very good. A bit like Rachael Yamagata, bit not as edgey. Or something. Jill is amusing and told silly, funny jokes that some people couldn't find the humor in. I like her. Jamell, you wanker, you should have come. After Jill's set, I bought a CD and had her sign it. Yay!
Phone posted during her set.
During her set, Oz (
ozw) and Vaidah (
alorarose) arrived. Oz couldn't get in and was practically being muscled out when I went to meet them. The bouncer was being a total dick and was all in our face about "finishing our conversation outside." Dude, chill. You allow minors in here if they're with a parent, so a minor standing here on his way out is no threat. Calm the hell down. Was really bummed that Oz couldn't get in :(
8:00pm
Milton was the next act. Not really into that sort of music, so. Yeah. Not so much. Spotted Oli sitting at a back table. Apparently we're Piano!Olli free for this tour, which is not a little bit sad.
9:20pm
This is what you all want to read about, right? Having fully intended to record Tom's set, I fumbled with my recorder, turning it off accidentally, and therefore missed the beginning of "You only Disappear." D'oh! >_< Tom performed the first two songs solo.
1. You Only Disappear
2. Sao Paulo Rain
At this point, Tom invited Oli on stage and they played a new song that's never been heard by us before. I'm not sure what the title is, or if it even has one yet as Tom didn't say.
3. "I'm falling into your arms"
phone post
"So that's the bright and breezy opening. We'll move on to songs about the end of the world now."
Tom intro'd the next song by telling us it was used on an FX show during a threesome scene. Nice. Except it was Rescue Me and it wasn't this song. Poor "Karaoke Soul."
4. Walking 2 Hawaii
"That's the love song out of the way. This song is about killing people."
5. Boy with the Bubblegun
"Of course, I don't advocate killing people at all; it's a terrible idea." Tom then makes a crack about the current leader of our country, which I shouldn't repeat because the Secret Service might take him away and then where would we be?
6. A & B Song
Tom says that the next album may be out in the fall "on some label somewhere" and makes a crack about not having an official merch booth this time.
"Next week will be the happy songs."
7. It Ain't You
Having fiddled with the exposure settings, I think I was able to snag some decent photos to use on the site this time. Except they're all pretty much the same shot, so I stopped taking photos at this point. Also, people who use flash photography during a show? Dude. Are you trying to blind them and annoy the rest of the audiance?
"I usually play with a band in Europe, but then the money runs out and we come down to the only person who will play with me for free. He doesn't know until tonight that he's with me for free, so this may be a solo gig for the rest of the month."
8. Silent Boulevard
Tried to phone post, but I don't think it worked.
"In the mood for one more? Can you handle one more? Two more? That's brave. Break out the Prozac now and we'll make it to three."
9. Bloodless
"We both had enough of London and LA. Sun freaks us out a little bit out there. So we - him and me - we're moving here but we're not moving in together. Again, he doesn't know this. [to Oli] You're on your own. I got stuff to do. I've got people to see.
I recognize a lot of familiar faces from friends we've made and shows we've done around, so thanks a lot for coming out and we'll maybe see you again in the next month."
10. Language of Fools
Tom apologizes for screwing up a few notes of the song and says to make up for it, he'll play one more song and then they'll fuck off.
"Are you applauding for the short song of the fact that we're going to fuck off?"
After the show
I immediately went up to the guy with the MD set up to record the show and asked for a copy. Gave him my contact info and said I was with Tomination and told him I could trade for whatever he'd like. I don't know if he was really just being generous or perhaps giving the crazy girl the brush off, but he said he'd bring me a copy next week.
I'm not proud, but I totally lost all manners and didn't introduce myself to Oli before I handed him more stickers and a few more postcards. Thankfully, he seemed to be really grateful that I brought them and even put a small stack out right away. I bought another copy of the CD for Berta and went in search of Tom. Nearly walked right past him if Vaidah didn't stop me. Had him sign the CD and we chatted about the artbook - which he loves!
Having said our goodbyes, we met with Oz on the corner - he got something pierced. Heh. *pats Oz* Took the subway to Herald Square and found a diner to have a late night snack. The waiter? So lazy. There was no one in the place and we got like no service. Afterwards, we went our seperate ways. Oz & Vaidah went back together and I went home with Joanne.
February 9, 2005
Woke up around 9:30 am and chatted with Joanne. I miss hanging out with her and being roomies. After watching some tv, we went to a nice Greek place for lunch. Their chicken salad is really good. We both decided last night that we need to go on a road trip together and Montreal was a good choice. So. You know, we'll need to start planning that.
Went to the Riverside Mall and walked around. Saw posters for Veronica Mars every five feet. Intended to go to a music store, but we passed the Bare Escentuals store, and I had to go in. We both had a consult and I ended up leaving with $100 worth of stuff. Oops. I really love the product, though, and I needed new foundation anyway.
Due to the lengthy consult, I ended up missing the 3:20pm train to Penn Station. Got the 3:50pm and arrived just in time to catch my 4:35pm train home. Figured it was all cake from here and I'd be home in time for Lost and Alias. Couldn't have been more wrong.
What's an end to Tom Day without a fiasco? We arrived in Albany-Rensselear around 7:00pm, paid my parking and headed home. Except I got on the wrong ramp and ended up I don't know where and was freaking out. I thought if I turned around, I could make my way back to 787... if only it were that easy. Somehow ended up in Bethlehem, at which point I called my mother and told her I was lost. *facepalm* Actually, it was that easy because i should have turned around and just kept going on So. Pearl to get back to Albany, at which point I'd know where the hell I was. The reason I'd turned around originally was that there were hordes of scary gang-looking people around and yea.. scary. You don't really want to be wandering around on South Pearl at night.
By the time I made it home, Lost had already started and I couldn't be bothered to watch Alias, so I'll be torrenting both.
